He was born on October 8, 1952 to Quentin and Catherine Whybark in Seattle, WA. and grew up in Bremerton, WA. He competed on the gymnastics team for West Bremerton High School and graduated in 1970. He attended Olympic College.
He married his high school sweetheart, Lori Huntley and they made their first home in
Pullman, Wa in 1972. He went on to get his degree in Criminal Justice at Washington State
University. He was hired by Mason County Sheriff’s office in 1978, where he was a corrections
officer, patrol officer, narcotics officer, a detective and became the undersheriff. He was elected Sheriff and served 12 years. He was a strong leader in the community through coaching sports and spending time with his children, Jeff Whybark and Bree Whybark.
He helped to open a volunteer sheriff’s office in Belfair and a Boys and Girls club in North Mason.
The North Precinct office is named in his honor.
One of Steven’s greatest joys was playing with his three grandchildren, Stephen, Emily and Dean. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports and attended many of their games. He
treasured their company in his final days.
Steve and his wife, Lori enjoyed swing and ballroom dance. Steve and Lori attended many
Jazz Festivals and ballroom dancing club events with their wonderful dancing friends.
He retired in 2006 and moved back to Kitsap Lake and became an avid fisherman. The
neighborhood eagles appreciated his skills when he would whistle for them to swoop into the
yard and pick up his catch. He enjoyed RVing and took his family on many trips throughout
Western USA and Canada. He and Lori also went on cruises to Alaska, Hawaii, Caribbean,
Bahamas and Europe.
Steve was blessed by having a loving family care for him at home during his battle with
multiple myeloma and Parkinson’s disease. He was cared for by his sister, Ann Whybark,
brother, Doug Whybark, daughter, Bree Borseth, son, Jeff Whybark and Jeff’s wife, Stephanie,
and his wife Lori Whybark. He was surrounded with love in his last days from his family and
friends.
To know Steve was to love Steve. His generous and caring nature was inspirational to many.
His quick wit and one liners endeared him to his friends and family.
A Celebration of Life is planned for January 23rd, at 2:00 at the North Mason High Gym.
