October 24, 1942 – April 7, 2025
Oscar Bjorn Peterson, lovingly known as “Pete,” passed away peacefully on April 7, 2025, at 11:28 p.m., surrounded by his devoted family. Born on October 24, 1942, in Redlands, California, Oscar was the beloved son of Gotfred Bjorn Peterson and Dorothy Hybirdine Barrickman.
Oscar graduated from Redlands High School in 1960, where he was a proud member of the wrestling team. That same year, he began a life of distinguished service by enlisting in the United States Navy. Over his nearly 20-year naval career, he served aboard numerous ships—including the USS Renville, USS Hancock, and USS Thomaston—and was stationed across the country. His dedication earned him numerous honors, including the Good Conduct Medal (with three stars), Vietnam Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation.
Following his Navy retirement in 1979, Oscar continued his commitment to service as a Civil Servant from 1983 until his retirement in 2003. He was recognized with several honors during this time, including the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award and the Superior Service Award.
A man of steady faith, Oscar was baptized in 1974 at Santee Baptist Church. His favorite scripture, John 3:16, reflected his deep belief in God’s love and grace. He was also a proud member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, finding companionship and community among fellow veterans.
Oscar is survived by his loving wife, Sally, and their children: Bud (Lisa), Jennifer (Jonathon), Todd (Monica), Catherine (Jeffrey), Lucreta (Mark), and Scott (Aimee). He was a cherished grandfather to Tiffany, Christopher, Brandi, Sarah, Ariel, Cody, Matthew, Austin, April, Travis, Kristina, Ashley, Daphne, Mariann and Dustin, and was blessed with several great-grandchildren. He is remembered with love by Mary Kathy Peterson.
Affectionately known for his wisdom, warmth, and dry wit, Oscar enjoyed the simple pleasures of life—spending time in the yard, relaxing with his dogs, watching baseball, wrestling, and football. He never turned down a bowl of popcorn or a cold Pepsi. He was the kind of man who, as Uncle Carl said, was “always right”—and even more importantly, always loved.
His life will be honored through heartfelt words and cherished songs, including “Amazing Grace” by Carrie Underwood and “Go Rest High on That Mountain” by Vince Gill. Oscar’s spirit lives on in the legacy he leaves behind: a family rooted in love, strength, and service.
Rest peacefully, Grandpa Pete. You were our rock—and you always will be.
