Mary was born in Mishuaka, Indiana to Garry Maggert and Mary Olive Hooper, being the fourth of five children.
She fell in love and married Norbert Hamre in 1951 then began their family, having five children. John Hamre, Lonne Hamre, Bob Hamre (Brenda), Tom Hamre (Julie) and Annette Bergsma (Mark). Adding to the family were 15 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
Norbert and Mary were happily married for 70 years. Showing us all what great love truly meant.
Mary is preceded in death by her love Norbert, Mother and Father Olive and Garry, Granddaughter Erin, Brothers Lawrence, Bob, Larry and Sister Delores.
Mary’s hobbies were sewing, crocheting, and spending her time with family. Her special gift was always giving to others. She was always the first to offer a helping hand and would often organize holiday parties and dinners for the families where she lived.
Mary also loved to volunteer, whether it be the Pee Wee cheer coach, running the Snack bar, cleaning uniforms, helping with the fields, and even sometimes helping the kids run for a touchdown. She was truly the Mom of Navy Yard City and she wore that title proudly. Whatever was happening, she always made it the best for everyone.
Remembering snow days, she made hot cocoa and toast for all the kids sledding on C street hill. She considered all the neighbor kids as her own. To name a few, The Dalton’s, Joiner’s, Roper’s, Tracy’s, Lewis’s, Williams’s, Middleton’s, Tucker’s, Horn’s, Blake’s, Joe Lynch, Bill Deam, Mike Sutherland and many others. She loved you all and often reflected back on those good times. May your memories of Mrs. Hamre keep you smiling.
Mary was the proudest Mom and Grandmother. Our strength came from her. She loved all of us unconditionally and was always there to listen, hug and help us through anything. The past almost 2 years without her love Norbert, we all knew her heart was broken. But she stayed strong for us all. Until we can be together again, we will have a piece of our hearts missing. We love you Mom and find peace knowing you are with Dad, in Gods arms.
Thank you to St. Michaels, 6th floor medical staff, along with Dr. Dhillon, for the loving care they gave our Mom and family through this heartbreaking time.
Flowers may be sent to her gravesite at Miller Woodlawn Funeral home.
Donations can be given to the homeless families with children.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.miller-woodlawn.com for the Hamre family.
