Mary Margaret Todd was born on January 20, 1924 in Liberty, Kansas. She spent her early years in Fort Riley, Kansas where her father was stationed. After her father retired, the family moved to Baker, Oregon where she graduated from Baker High School. During World War II, Mary worked for the military and lived in California and Oregon. After the War ended, she married Milton K. Egeland and settled into military life. She spent time in Japan and Alaska then finally, settling in Tacoma in 1960.
Mary retired from Fort Lewis NCO Club and went on to waitress in different restaurants until well into her seventies. She loved to travel and never grew tired of exploring new places with family members. Even in her late nineties, Mary was always happy and interactive at gatherings whether at home or traveling. She was an active member of First Christian Church and spent many dedicated hours involved in their activities. Gardening was her passion. She spent many happy hours with her beloved roses. She left to tend the heavenly gardens on November 28, 2020.
Mary has four children: Celeste Egeland Poechhacker, Theodore Egeland and spouse Linda, Robert Egeland, and Kerrie Egeland Rugg and spouse Randy. She has eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Every memory of Mary from family and friends emphasizes her as a warm, loving, happy, caring, and independent woman who always had a smile and a laugh to brighten everyone’s day. Everyone who knew Mary considered her as one of their favorite people. She made a big positive impression on everyone she met.
