John J. Pounch passed away at the age of 63 at his home in Silverdale, WA. Born to Philip and Teresa Pounch in Norwich, CT he was raised alongside his brothers, Philip, Robert (John’s twin), and sisters, Susan, Mary, and Patricia.
John’s professional career started in 1979 when he went to work at Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics where John started out as a Marine Electrician. He worked his way up thru the ranks and, by 2006, he was providing Engineering Deckplate Support for Virginia Class, Seawolf Class and SSGN Ohio Class Submarines as a Senior Electrical Designer.
From 2006 to 2013, John served as the Operations Supervisor for Maintenance and Modernization for Electric Boat at Bremerton, WA.
In 2014 John left Electric Boat and accepted a Production Superintendent Position with Pacific Shipyards International, LLC located in Hawaii. While there, John supervised personnel from various disciplines and ensured projects assigned were on schedule and within budget.
In 2016 John accepted a Project Coordinator position with AustalUSA in Mobile, Alabama where he provided coordination, guidance and direction during the construction of the US Navy’s LCS Class vessels. He went on to coordinate with the US Navy on behalf of AustalUSA when turning the vessels over to the Navy.
John also worked for Huntington Ingalls as a Designer 4/Senior Designer incorporating Standard Design Procedures, provided guidance in the development of Cableways and Wire Assembly Details.
In 2019 John worked shortly as a Senior Electrical Designer at Eastern Shipbuilding Group located in Panama City, Florida. There he provided guidance in the development of Assembly Detail and Installation Design for the US Coast Guard’s OPC (Offshore Patrol Cutter) Program.
From October 2020 to July 2021 John worked for Gryphon Technologies, LLC as a Senior Electrical Designer incorporating technical detailed design support for the USS ESSEX, LHD 2.
2021, John returned to Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics as a Test Engineer Spec- Systems, providing support for Maintenance and Modernization activities. Duties include developing technical work documents (TWDs) such as Task Group Instructions (TGIs) and provide Engineering Deck plate support (trouble desk) to resolve emergent issues.
John enjoyed the great outdoors of the Pacific Northwest. He loved camping up at Lake Cushman in WA. and along the Clackamas River in Oregon. He loved outdoor BBQ’s on weekends and Road Trips with his wife Doris.
John volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, St. Vincent de Paul and PCHS. Later in his life he developed a passion for Art encompassing painting and drawing. He signed up for art class in Bremerton. First day of class he decided it wasn’t for him. He came home and told me he was dropping out of Art class. I asked why? He said… I’m the oldest in the whole class and I’m a left hander, and it’s a no go! Next class his instructor convinced him to give it a try. From that point on he loved painting and drawing.
John will be remembered for his awe-inspiring infectious smile, fun loving personality with a bit of mischievousness, his humor, kindness, wisdom, and joy he brought to everyone he crossed paths with.
He will be greatly missed by family and many friends. We all loved John!
John was preceded in death by his sister, Susan Parkinson, his father, Philip, and mother, Teresa Pounch.
He is survived by his wife Doris Pounch
