August 6, 1971 - February 9, 2025
We are totally devastated at the sudden and unexpected passing on February 9th, 2025 of our beloved son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, coach and friend to many due to a 54-year lifelong battle with several chronic illnesses and numerous medical treatments for the same.
Brian was born in Bremerton at Harrison Memorial Hospital on August 6, 1971. His first Thanksgiving and Christmas that year were spent in the pediatric ward at Harrison Hospital and sadly proved to be foreboding of what the future held for Brian.
Before the chronic illnesses took total control of Brian's life, he was able to enjoy a few brief years of normalcy. During those times he was a member of the Central Kitsap High School golf team and was a 4-year varsity letterman. He was also one member of the two-man golf team in 1990 to win the Tim Higgins Memorial Golf Tournament played at Kitsap Golf and Country Club for all high schools in the area. Before his love of golf was eliminated due to his illnesses, Brian also won his division one year in the Kitsap Amateur Golf Tournament at KGCC. Brian loved music and enjoyed playing his drum set until that too was taken from him by his illnesses. Brian loved the UW Huskies and attended several football and basketball games, including two holiday bowl games with his dad in San Diego. He also loved the Dallas Cowboys and while being treated in Dallas, Brian was able to attend a home game win for the Cowboys over their rivals the Washington Redskins. One of the happiest and most memorable moments in Brian's life was when, just hours before kickoff, he was able to scalp an end zone ticket to the January 28, 1996 Super Bowl. Tickets were still priced reasonable in 1996, and Brian got to watch his Cowboys beat the Steelers 27-17 at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona. Another memorable time was in 2001 when he was in Tempe, Arizona with his pops to watch a Husky vs. ASU football game and they were able to purchase two tickets to attend a World Series game between the D-backs and the Yankees.
Brian loved to coach and teach young men that there was much more to learn from sports than just winning and losing. He was an assistant football coach and a head basketball coach for the Chico Peewees. He helped coach basketball at Klahowya High School and was the boys Junior Varsity head coach for one year. In addition, before his health forced Brian to give up coaching he put together and coached an AAU basketball team made up of high school players from all over the Olympic Peninsula that competed with teams located in the Puget Sound area and included an upset win over a highly rated team from South Central Seattle.
After Brian graduated from CK High School in 1990 he soon entered a 5-year union plumbing and pipefitting industry apprenticeship program. His health was starting to take a rapid turn for the worse so although he struggled through and graduated as a journeyman, he was never able to continue this as a career. The majority of his life was spent in doctors offices, hospitals and medical clinics throughout the country, including three of the most prestigious trying to find a small ray of hope to hang on to. But that would never happen. The only medical treatments available were medications whose side effects were equally as harmful and took as big a toll on the body as the diseases themselves.
Throughout all his trials and tribulations, and after having his hopes and dreams for just a halfway normal life smashed time and time again, Brian never wavered in his love for Jesus Christ. In his darkest moments Brian would watch the movie The Passion of the Christ over and over again to see the pain and suffering Jesus endured for us all and Brian would receive brief moments of solace after watching.
Do not judge a pain you do not feel. We can never begin to imagine what Brian endured during his way too short lifetime. Brian fought long and hard for 54 years but at the end he was totally exhausted and had nothing left to give any longer. Although we are left with a huge hole in our hearts at Brian's passing, we are comforted knowing he is with Jesus and he has finally found "the peace of god which surpasses all understanding" and is also in the arms of his predeceased loved ones and with his best friend and companion, his husky dog "Sonny".
Brian is survived by his father Robert (Dorothy), mother Janice, brother Bret (Jenny), nephews Braden Grimm & Johnny Velarde, niece Rose Grimm, partner and love of his life Melissa Iuliano, uncle Gene Jarstad (Jenn), Aunt Susan Leavell (Dick), Aunt Kay Denny (Mike), and cousins too numerous to name, along with countless friends.
Brian was predeceased by his paternal grandparents George & Dorothy Grimm, maternal grandparents, Glenn & June Jarstad, Uncle and Aunt Dave & Jill Urwin and uncle Doug Grimm.
In Brian's memory do as he always did and be a friend to someone in their time of need. Just by taking the time to listen to them and show you care along with a smile can make all the difference in the world to them for the rest of their lives.
We want to give a special thank-you to Brian's sister-in-law Jenny and aunts Susan and Kay for all their help.
Celebration of Life services will be held on Saturday, March 15 at 1:00pm at the New Life Training and Events Center in Silverdale, 9923 Poplars Ave NW, Silverdale, WA 98383.
