Betty was born in Toledo, Ohio, on March 4, 1927, to Sam and Hazel
Landis. She was the middle child of three. The family moved several times
before settling in Alton, Illinois. Following her high school graduation,
Betty worked as a bookkeeper. In 1950 she received her R.N. diploma
from the Lutheran Nursing School in St. Louis. She joined the Navy in
1951 and worked as an R.N. in the hospital nursery at Puget Sound
Naval Shipyard.
Betty met Ed Peterson at a PSNS square dance. They married in 1952 and
settled in Bremerton’s Manette neighborhood. After Betty’s discharge from
the Navy, the family grew to include four children.
Betty and Ed were active members of Memorial Lutheran Church. They
also enjoyed traveling, playing pinochle, and gathering with family.
Betty resumed her nursing career in 1970 as a charge nurse at Horton and
Resthaven nursing homes. When Ed contracted Parkinson’s disease, Betty’s
nursing skills kept him safe at home.
Ed died in 2006. Betty’s parents, brothers Don and Ken Landis, and grandson Eddie also preceded her in death. Betty will be missed by her children
Karen Taylor (Dennis), Ted Peterson (Beth Bryson), Linda Rise (Ralph), and
Dave Peterson (Laura); grandchildren Alice, Elspeth, Heidi, Sam, Stephen,
Peter, Emi, Bettiann, and Wren; and great-grandchildren Teagan, Marcus,
Alden, and Eleanore.
Betty’s funeral service will take place at 10 am on Saturday, January 27 at
Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 2509 Perry Avenue in Bremerton. A reception
will follow in the parish hall. Memorials may be sent to Lutheran
Community Services, 645 4th Street #202, Bremerton 98337 or the
Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research at michaeljfox.org
