On Wednesday, June 1, with his loving wife of 70 years holding his hand, Dr. William Emerson Page left us to take care of ourselves, after almost 98 years in the service of us and others.
The son of Wm. A. Page (an OPP officer) and Lillian (Ireland) Page (a high school English teacher), he served his country in WW2 as a member of the Intelligence Corps of the No. 1 Canadian Special Wireless Group in Darwin, Australia.
After the war, he attended the University of Toronto, triumphantly leaving there with his medical degree in his hand and the love of his life, Margaret Plewes of Brantford, on his arm.
After interning in Hamilton, Dr. Page settled into general practice in Cobourg, Ontario where he became especially proficient in bringing babies into the world, while he and Maggie also did their part by contributing four of their own.
In 1966, Dr. Page sold his practice, went back to school, and procured a diploma in public health, subsequently serving Brantford and Brant County for 22 years as Medical Officer of Health.
He was predeceased by his daughter Judy (1987), granddaughter Becky (1988), and sister Mary Ryan (2020).
Left to mourn this loss are his wife Margaret; his sister Geraldine Page in Arizona; his children Bill (Judy Wong Page), Katie (John Witt), and Liz (Luis Almeida); grandchildren Jay Page (Alex), Laura Almeida, Sarah Almeida, Jillian Page, Jennifer Page, and Olivia Almeida; as well as surrogate family members Ted, Elizabeth, Tessa, Annie, and Emma Paling.
Uncle Bill will also be forever cherished by many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
Dad's passions were pretty clear. He loved to fish. He loved to golf (a proud member of the Brantford Golf & Country Club for close to 60 years). He loved to grow garlic and tomatoes and giant zucchinis. He loved this community. Most important to him, though, was his family, and that's what he loved more than anything on earth.
That family would like to thank the dedicated and caring staff of the Brant Community Healthcare System, particularly those on B7 and C7 for easing him to the end; and, of course, the many remarkable PSWs who helped Mom and Liz take care of Dad in his last years, allowing him to remain living in his own home until the age of 97!
Arrangements have been entrusted to Thorpe Brothers Funeral Home, 96 West Street, Brantford, with cremation having already taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at The Brantford Golf & Country Club (60 Ava Rd., Brantford) on Friday, July 8, 2022 from 3-6 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Brant Community Healthcare System Foundation, or Diabetes Canada.
