William R. Pichler, lovingly known as "Pic," passed away on October 15, 2024, at HCA Southshore Hospital. Born on October 31, 1941, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Pic lived a life filled with love for his family, deep-rooted friendships, and an unwavering passion for sports and community.
Pic graduated from Bethlehem schools in 1959, and in 1962, he joined the Navy, proudly serving his country. Afterward, he attended Montana State College and began a 21-year career at Bethlehem Steel Corporation, contributing to the legacy of one of America's great industries. Pic carried the strength of the steel mill with him throughout his life, embodying hard work, resilience, and loyalty.
After relocating to Florida, he spent 12 years in the Merchant Marines. He has been a member of Tampa Mason Lodge 240 since 2001.
Pic's true love was sports. For 18 years, he was a PIAA Basketball Referee, known for his fairness and respect on the court. He coached at Notre Dame Elementary School, and for three years, guided the softball team at Muhlenberg College with the same dedication he showed throughout his life. Pic’s passion for softball extended to a remarkable seven-year career in Major League Fast Pitch, and in 2005, he joined the Brandon Senior Softball League, where he continued to play for many years. His love for the game and his vibrant spirit left a lasting mark on all who played alongside him.
Beyond his accomplishments, Pic was a family man through and through. He is survived by his loving wife, Linda Grant-Pichler, who stood by his side every step of the way. He was the proud father of his two daughters, Pam Hein and Linda Pichler, who carry his values and strength forward. He is also survived by his two stepsons Michael and Stephen Welch, and brothers, Joseph Pichler and John Toth, who shared a lifetime of brotherly adventures. His love extended to his wonderful grandchildren and great-grandchildren, each a special light in his life, who will carry on his legacy of joy, love, and laughter.
Pic was preceded in death by his half-sister, Diane Toth, and his stepsister, Sandra Ender, both of whom held a special place in his heart. Now reunited with them, Pic’s spirit lives on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
William R. Pichler lived a life filled with purpose, passion, and love. He will be remembered for the integrity he brought to every game, the loyalty he showed to his family, and the joy he shared with everyone he met. Rest in peace, Pic. You’ve played life’s game with all your heart, and the field will never be the same without you.
A funeral service for William will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, October 27, 2024 at Stowers Funeral Home, 401 West Brandon Boulevard, Brandon, Florida. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.
