After completing his primary education at Orchard Place Elementary School in Des Plaines, Illinois, he graduated from Maine West High School in Des Plaines, Illinois. He went on to earn a Bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin, a Master's degree from Florida Atlantic University, and a PhD from the University of Florida.
Dr. Hammond was a Professor of Spanish Linguistics in the School of Languages & Cultures at Purdue University from 1988 until his retirement in 2012. He was a Major Professor for hundreds of MA and PhD students and taught countless undergraduate and graduate students over the years. He was an important part of FLL/SLC for a long time and had a huge impact on so many colleagues and students. Dr. Hammond was a brilliant linguist who made extraordinary contributions to the field of Spanish linguistics and Cuban Spanish dialectology.
Bob is survived by his spouse, Cindy McDill Hammond, his stepdaughters Melissa Robinson (John)and Nichole Vester(Matt) his stepson Douglas McDill, his granddaughter Ava Robinson, his granddaughter, Reese Robinson, his granddaughter Rylee Vester, his grandson Jaxon Vester, his granddaughter Ella Garriott, and his granddaughter Marley Houck, his sister Kathy Hamm(Larry)his niece Kayla Clarkson(Jon)his nephew Matt Hamm, his great-nephew Benjamin Clarkson, his great-niece Emily Clarkson, and his great-nephew Matthew Clarkson.
Dr. Hammond was kind and generous to his friends and family, and he will never be forgotten. He was a great professor and a wonderful human being. His family and friends will miss him dearly.
