Richard Dennis Lyons, age 72, went to be with the Lord on May 1, 2023, after a long valiant battle against cancer. He was a loving brother, husband and father who lived a full life and most recently resided in Dover, Florida.
Richard was born on February 6, 1951, in Takoma Park, Maryland and later moved to St. Petersburg, Florida where he completed his high school education. Richard went on to earn his Bachelor of Science degree from the U.S. Military Academy West Point in 1973. Later on, he completed his Masters of Arts in Russian Area Studies from Georgetown University in 1983.
Richard served in the United States Army for 24 years, during which time he had the opportunity to travel and live in many parts of the world. He was stationed in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma; Wertheim, Germany; Ft. Stewart, Georgia; Carlisle, Pennsylvania; Ft. Ord, California; Garmisch and Berlin, Germany; Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas; and Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; and Northern Virginia. He retired from the military in 1997 and went on to have a successful career in the private sector while living in Herndon, Virginia. In 2010, Richard officially retired and moved down to Dover, Florida. During his early retirement years, Richard dedicated his time serving as the Florida Chapter President of the Marty Lyons Foundation, a charity focused on granting wishes to critically ill children.
Richard was a dedicated family man who adored his wife, Renee, their two children, Sean and Stephanie and his daughter-in-law Kendra. He was also a proud grandfather to four beautiful granddaughters. In his free time, Richard enjoyed playing golf with his friends and smoking meat for dinners with family and friends where he loved to reminisce on his time in the military and to tell stories that would bring smiles to all.
Richard will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Details for the Memorial Service and Celebration of Life gathering have been finalized and can be found below under Services. All family and friends will have an opportunity to share stories and memories of Richard’s life during the gathering.
