Dr. Paul “Lee” Jones, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on April 7, 2025, at the age of 85. A man of unwavering dedication and kindness, Lee was first and foremost a doctor—his life’s calling and greatest passion.
Born and raised in a small town in Ohio, Lee was the son of Paul Ellsworth Jones and Velma Long Jones. He proudly served his country as a Major in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, earning numerous commendations, including the Combat Medical Badge and the Vietnam Service Medal, among others. His service to others did not end when he left the military—it was only the beginning of a career marked by excellence and compassion.
As an ENT, otorhinolaryngologist, and maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Jones dedicated over 40 years to serving patients in the Brandon, Florida, area. He was a founding member of Brandon Community Hospital, the very place where he spent his final moments. His impact on the medical community and his patients was immeasurable, and his legacy will live on through the lives he touched.
Beyond medicine, Lee was a man of many passions. A devoted fan of Ohio State football, he was thrilled to see them win the national championship this year. He was also a longtime Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan and a former season ticket holder, cheering them on through every high and low. Summers were spent at Rowdies soccer games, and Fourth of July fireworks over Raymond James Stadium remain some of the fondest memories shared with his family.
He cherished his retirement years, enjoying RV adventures, time with his beloved dogs, and, most of all, moments with his family. Lee adored his grandchildren, Brett and Hannah, who brought him endless joy. He and Hannah had a long-running playful tradition—every time they parted, he would yell, “Bye, Hannah,” and she would yell back, “Bye, Grandpa,” always with a smile. He was incredibly proud of his grandson, Brett, who followed in his footsteps to become a doctor. One of Lee’s proudest moments was being able to present Brett with his doctorate degree at Brett’s graduation ceremony.
Lee is survived by his loving wife, Laurie Jones; Sister, Susan (Sue) Mullane, his children, Sue Jones, Paul Jones and wife DeeDee, and Kevin O’Brien and wife Teresa; and his treasured grandchildren, Hannah and Brett Jones. He was a rock for his family—always there when they needed him most. A wonderful father, a devoted grandfather, and a man who left an indelible mark on everyone he met, Lee will be missed.
His memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him, in the lives he saved, and in the laughter of his grandchildren.
A private family service will be held at Bushnell National Cemetery at a later date.
