A beloved elementary art teacher, Linda brought joy, encouragement, and love to all her students, family, and friends. If Linda was your friend, you had a friend for life who was always there for you. Linda was born in Tracy, Minnesota on December 9, 1949 to Harold and Verna Wadhams. Her dad worked on the railroad line between Tracy and Huron South Dakota, to where they moved when she was three. She is survived by five siblings to include her brother Richard of Omaha, Nebraska and sisters Ruth Wolff, Jane Sondreal, Paula Meyer, and Mary Neugebauer, all from Huron.
Linda married Don Sherman in 1969 after they met as freshmen at South Dakota State University. They had 2 children, Cathy Newcomb (husband-Roy), a professional photographer in Sioux Falls SD, and Steve (wife-Erin), an ordained minister at First Christian Church of Oak Ridge TN. She was so proud of how they both are loving parents and valued members of their communities and their churches. She is survived by grandsons Josh Newcomb 25 who works as a plumber’s apprentice in Sioux Falls, Jake Newcomb 21 who is serving the Army in Europe, Gabe 13 and Luke 9 who are all wonderful, smart, kind, and caring young men. A testimony to their Memaw.
Don’s military career took them to Germany for 7 years as well as Queens NY, Indianapolis, Ft Leavenworth KS, MacDill AFB Florida, and Fort Carson Colorado. They loved to travel throughout Europe and Africa. After her retirement in 2016 they completed “bucket list” trips to the Grand Canyon, Italy, Greece, and Australia
After graduating from the University of Kansas, she taught art in a variety of schools including: The DOD School System in Wiesbaden Germany, several Polk County schools, Pine Valley Elementary on the Air Force Academy, Dover Exceptional School and Alafia Elementary. While serving a total of 30 years as a teacher, she cherished the students most of all. Her fellow staff recognized her dedication and love of teaching and in 2004, named her the Alafia Teacher of the Year.
She served God and Brandon Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) as elder, deacon, moderator, teacher, and in numerous Christian Education roles. A talented artist, she expressed her creativity through sewing, quilting, watercolor, drawing, pottery, and glass blowing. She was always ready to help anyone who needed her artistic skills and took special delight in gifting her finished work.
A Memorial Service will be held at Brandon Christian Church, 910 Bryan Rd, Brandon FL 33511 on June 4. 2022 at 1:30PM. Gifts can be made in her memory to the ministries of Brandon Christian Church.
