Cerra, John Anthony, 72, passed peacefully on July 22, 2023 after a fierce year-long battle with cancer. He was surrounded in love by his family and friends. Johnny, as he was known to his family and family friends, was born in Tampa (Ybor City), FL. He attended OLPH and graduated from Tampa Catholic High School, Class of 69 and moved on to business school. His career in accounting began at a small automotive parts business but was later followed by his full career in Payroll with Hillsborough County Public Schools until his retirement.
John was preceded in death by his mother, Josephine DeLaOsa Chavez and step father, Rudolph Chavez, beloved grandparents, Carmela Ligori Rodriguez and Cristobal Rodriguez. He is survived by Cindy Chavez (sister) and Rudolph “Chris” Chavez (brother), Kristen Cantres/niece (Daniel), Michael Chavez/nephew (Bionca) and grand nieces/nephew; Reagan, McKayla, Josella and Elián.
Just prior to retirement, John discovered his passion for bowling. He was a member of the “Mavericks” league at Pin Chasers Midtown. He absolutely loved his teammates and the time spent cheering each other on. He would get so excited if he won $5 or a free pizza. During his struggle with cancer, he kept his “eyes on the ball”, the bowling ball that is. His goal was to get back to the game. Also, he looked forward to getting back to regular lunches with his former school board coworkers.
John’s other passion was his “feline” family. He loved the Himalayan cats he raised and would present at cat shows with his best friend, Cathy. Throughout the years, his beautiful cats enjoyed the run of the house and patio and were treated like royalty, several living past 20 years old.
Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers for John. He felt and appreciated your love and concern. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Melech Hospice House or other charity of your choice.
