James (Jim) was the only child born to Frances and Wilson Gammon on Christmas day in 1938. His father was a pilot in the Army Air-Corp during WWII so Jim spent his early childhood in Texas with his Mom on his Grandfather's farm. When his father returned from the war they were stationed in several bases around the US from Roswell, New Mexico to Homestead, Florida and several places in between. He graduated from Coral Gables High School. He spent a semester at the University of Miami before joining the AirForce. There he served as a mechanic and fuel jockey to the planes and jets that came into the Homestead Air Force Base.
Jim's passion was anything that was FAST .... boats, motorcycles, cars! He raced ski boats up the intercoastal and was a mechanic for race car driver John Cuevas. Jim joined SCCA and began road racing Mini Coopers, Sprites, Spitfires, Porsches, 240zs, MG midgets, and others at Sebring, Atlanta, Ponca City, Daytona as part of a team or as an individual.
He met his first wife Joyce while in the Air Force at Homestead. She brought with her 3 children and together they had 2 more. They divorced after 12 years. Jim married his second wife (Jane) in 1975 and she brought 2 more children to the mix. They have been married 48 years. He fought a good fight but lost his battle on April 12, 2024.
Jim is predeceased by his first wife Joyce Ct:evas Gammon, his 3 eldest children, Rodney Cuevas, Debbie Cuevas Hogan, and Eddie Cuevas. He is survived by his second wife Jane, 4 children, Fran (Bob) Gammon Mitchell, James P. Gammon, Brian (Melissa) Radatz, and Wendy (B:11) Rc.datz Johnson, 9-grandchildren, Jackson (Taylor) Mitchell, Grant Mitchell, J.T. Cuevas, Jacob Cuevas, Madeline Gammon, Alex Gammon, Jamye Gammon, Fae Johnson, Ty Johnson, 1-great grandson Colin Mitchell, 1-great granddaughter soon to arrive and 2-daughters-inlaw Angela Cuevas and Karrie Cuevas.
There are no plans for a funeral, Jim has asked to be cremated, with a Celebration of his Life at a later date.
Jim loved animals especially dogs, in lieu of flowers we ask that any donations be made to your local animal rescue.
