“Sparrow,” “Bird Leg,” “Slim,” or “Walker,” as his friends knew him. To his family, Herbert Leslie Walker of Polk County, Florida, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 31, 2022, at the age of 78 at Tampa Lakes Health & Rehabilitation Center in Lutz, FL.
Herbert was born in St. Andrew (King Weston), Jamaica, on September 21, 1944. In 1983, his family migrated to the United States, where they settled in Brooklyn, New York. After settling in Brooklyn and working various jobs. Herbert was a hardworking man, and to be without a job was never his idea of what a man is supposed to do. To support his family, he was always gainfully employed, securing employment that utilized his skillset as a tradesman. Prior to his retirement, Herbert worked as a Property Maintenance Worker for the NYC Housing Authority. After completing twenty years of service for the NYC Housing Authority, he retired in 2005 and relocated to Florida.
The next phase of his life allowed him to focus on his faith in God and his family. Herbert prayed and worshiped his way. His relationship with God needed no one but his beliefs, his bible, and his prayers. Herbert’s children and grandchildren were the sources of his joy. To show his love, he shared his love of agriculture by nurturing what he planted and feeding his children and those around him. He was generous; whatever he had, he shared it knowing as he would say, “Mi get mi tanks from God.”
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, father Egbert, mother Irene Walker, and five (5) sisters (Gloria, Cephaline, Icylin, Beverly, Patsy, and two (2) brothers (Llyod, Timothy). Seven (7) other siblings, Monica, Egbert, Ruth, Cathleen, Lorna, Anne, and Maria, survive him.
He leaves to mourn along with his surviving siblings, his six (6) children, Dave (Sharon) Walker, Ingrid (Wallace) Walker-Descartes, Carleen (Dwayne) Walker-Baker, Steve (Annie) Walker, and two other daughters; four (4) grandchildren (Matthew (Christine) Walker, Idalis Walker-Descartes, Demaris Walker-Descartes, and Sonali Baker; one (1) great-grandchild (Josiah Walker), along with numerous nieces, nephews, and many extended family members and friends.
Funeral services and viewing will be at Hillsboro Memorial Funeral Home and Memorial Garden, 2323 West Brandon Blvd, Florida 33511. Herbert's private family visitation will be held on Friday, February 10th, 2023, from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Friends and extended family visitation will occur Friday, February 10th, 2023, from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM. His Home Going Service will occur Friday, February 10, 2023, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
Repass for Herbert L. Walker will be held on February 11th, 2023, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Activation Catering Hall located at 2598 East State Road 60, Valrico, FL 33594.
Above and beyond all, Herbert desired peace. In honoring his homegoing and celebrating his life, we (his children) will have it no other way. Our father, Herbert L. Walker, went in peace when he was ready, and he will be sent home peacefully so he may rest “In Peace.”
