Mr. and Mrs. Sutherland always came to Siesta Key FL to stay at Tropical Beach Resorts. It was Mr. Sutherland's Favorite spot!! I always loved when they came to stay here because it gave us time to catch up and talk about life and all the things that have gone on in our lives since the last time we saw each other. I never told them but I recently with in the past 6  years I lost both of my grandparents it was the worst thing that has ever happened in my life. Well that was about the time they both started coming to stay here with us at Tropical Beach Resorts and Let me tell you it was like I had both my grandparents back in my life!! Now I only got to see them once a year but it always made me feel so special to have such a deep connection with the 2 of them!! So I took Mr. Sutherland's passing like a personal loss again because he truly meant a great deal in my life with out even knowing it!! I can't wait until we can all reunite in the Lords house and maybe introduce my grandpa and Mr. Sutherland if they haven't already met!! Thanks for always being so amazing to me you have no idea how much you touched my heart and changed my life!! You will truly be missed!!

Jamie and I were the same age and on summer visits we would go fishing on Brierly Brook with his dad. We actually did more swimming than fishing but had a lot of fun.
Very sorry to here of his passing.

So sorry to hear of Jim’s passing. Although I always knew who Jim was, I never had the privilege of meeting him until 1988 at My brother Mike MacNeill’s wedding. I told him then that I was getting married the following summer and he told me to send him an invitation and he and his family would come to Nova Scotia to my wedding. I sent the invitation and he came and had a great time. I didn’t know him well however he seemed to be the kind of person that enjoyed people and was very proud of his family. RIP Jim, from your cousin Sherri. 

I wasn’t born a Sutherland but I couldn’t be more proud to have the name.  Being a Sutherland means being part of one of the most loving, kind and generous families I have ever met… and James was the leader of it all!  The first time I met James (he was in the kitchen meticulously cutting his midnight cheese snack) he immediately made me feel welcome and loved.  Family meant everything to him and you didn’t have to be a blood relative to be family in his eyes (he helped my brother get a job when he was struggling to find work and included my mother in all family functions when she moved into our home).  The day I married his son was one of the best days of my life.  Not only was I getting to spend my life with the most amazing man I know, I was getting to be part of one of the most amazing families I know. At our wedding, James handed me a hat with the Sutherland crest on it and I wear that name proudly (and I do).  Since that day, I have strived to make James and Bev proud of me.  I want to have the marriage they have and have learned so much from them.  James was an amazing husband and has been an amazing role model to my husband and my son.  Clay is the man he is because of everything his parents taught him, and the husband and father he has become was due to having James as his father.  I hope we can instill in our son the same values he instilled in his son.  If we do, the world will be a better place as I have never met such as selfless person.  You will be missed James.  Our family has a giant hole in it now but you have left behind your legacy and they will make you  proud!

To my Dear Husband, when we met in 1968 my heart told me you were the One! You have been my strength and comfort for 47 years. We have lived a life with ups and downs but always together in our decisions. A better soul mate could never have been found.

I always looked up to my father. He taught me how to work hard and do things right the first time.  He taught me never be afraid to help out a person in need. He taught me that in order to help yourself you need to help others.  He taught me to always have a sense of humour, especially in the bad times. He taught me to be a loyal and  supportive husband, happy wife happy life he would say. I always measured my success in life based on his reponses and how proud he was of me. I know I was always proud of him. I hope that when its my time I can look back and say I would have made him proud and I met his expectation as he has certainly met mine.  
Goodbye Dad, I will never forget you and everything you have done for me.

I have known Jim for 45+ years. We started working together at Bulova Watch Company in 1973, then started up the poker group in 1974, along with Quinton, Peter, Paul, and Harold. Jim's passing is a huge loss to me. He is the most generous, unselfish person I have ever met. Don't get me wrong, he loved to win at poker but he would give the shirt off his back to make life better for you. He made each poker night so much fun. Jim would always ask how each of us were, and how our kids were.. he showed so much interest in us. 
He was passionate about his family and friends, and his courage was evident in the way he handled all of life's challenges.. medical and otherwise. We all know that Jim could talk and I will truly miss my wonderful discussions with him.. God bless you Jim.

My memories of James are short and sweet the few times we met he was kind and courteous.   What I do know of him was, that he raised a wonderful son and lovely daughter who loved him eminencely.  He opened his home to those he thought of as family and loved them as his own.  James loved his grandsons with his whole heart and was generous almost to a fault.  He devoted  his life to his soulmate who he spend a life time  adoring.  He will be forever missed by so many, admired by all that knew him. He now watches over his family soaring with Angel's. RIP James.

Bernie and I would like to send our deepest sympathy to the entire Sutherland family! We also want to thank them for all the kindness they showed to my sister Sharon,, they always included her in their family gatherings and truly made her feel like a member of the family! When Sharon retired James helped her work out  a budget to live on and took her to set up her own funeral . Sharon was so pleased she called and told me James had just got the rest of her life on track for her.  We were very grateful that James had give her the peace of mind she needed to enjoy the remainder of her life!

I met Jim through Clay and Tracy as I was returning to the work force after my car accident   Jim helped me get a job where he was working at the time and became a great friend. He always had something kind to say about everyone and encouraged others to be better and do more. He will be greatly missed by all. My condolences to all his family and friends.

My memories of Mr. Sutherland are short but very sweet. I am friend and co-worker of his daughter, Tamara, who I have grown to love and respect deeply over the last couple of years. She is a lovely person who has a huge heart and is generous to anyone that crosses her path, a trait that I suspect has been passed down from her parents. One wintery Canadian morning this past February, Tamara slipped on the ice in her driveway and hurt her back and neck. Despite the fall Tamara made still made her way to work, sore as heck!  Around lunch time I told her she needed to get her butt home.. And offered her a drive. As we were pulling up to her home her loving father, James, was there. He was spreading road salt after hearing that his daughter had fallen and hurt herself.  He was friendly and loving and couldn't be happier than to be helping his daughter. Although I didn't know him well personally, I know he loved his daughter immensely. As a  parent myself, I will always remember that love. What a great legacy to leave in the eyes of a stranger. Rest in peace Mr. Sutherland, xoxo.
