It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a great man. Daniel James Nolan (Dan) passed away peacefully on May 17th 2022 in his 87th year. Dan is survived by his devoted wife Vera of 63 years. Dan was a treasured father to his 4 children; Debbie (John), Danny (Susan), Donna (Marc), David (Dana) and his chosen daughter Kath (Steven). Adored “Papa Dan” to Shannon, Mike, Ashley, Sarah, Chris, Emily, Luke, Delaney, Breanne, Carly, Mack , Sam and great grandchildren Madyn, Logan and Harlen. Brothers Jack (Carol), Greg (Barb) and sister-in-law Jane, and “Nanny’s Clan”. Dan was predeceased by his parents Gertrude, Clarence and brother Clarence Jr. (Bud).
Dan was born in Boston, Massachusetts on March 6th 1936, and moved to Canada at a young age. He grew up in Toronto and met his beloved wife Vera at Our Lady of Peace Parish Youth Club. After just a year, the two were married and began their life together. Vera & Dan planted their family’s roots in Bramalea. Dan was a humble man, devout Catholic, founding member of St. John Fisher Parish and an amazing friend to many. He had a gift of bringing friends and family together, planning a party, dance, picnic, tournament or fishing/hunting trip. He had a great love for music, was an awesome drummer and loved playing with the Pub Nights and The Sound of Reflection with Vera by his side.
Among Dan’s greatest joys were his inherited O’Halloran brothers, sisters and their families, aka “Nanny’s Clan”. More than anything, he loved spending time with family in Buffalo, Nova Scotia & Prince Edward Island. He yearned for family reunions and more treasured memories at the North Shore, Goose River and Peak’s Tee in P.E.I. From down East to Buffalo and everywhere in between, “Papa Dan” loved his family like no other.
Dan was deeply involved in the Bramalea community and left his mark in many ways. He was the founder of the Thursday Night Old Boys and reveled in the Brotherhood and cherished friendships. Dan was inducted in to the Canadian Oldtimers Hockey Hall of Fame in the late 1990’s He was the owner of 3 D’s Musicland and Dan’s Sporting Goods. He worked at The Fisherman’s Place, Mayfield Golf Course.
Papa Dan never missed a hockey, lacrosse, baseball game, dance recital or family party. He was an icon in the hockey community and will forever be remembered by the ‘96 Brampton Hockey Family. Although he loved Boston, their hockey team never compared to the love he had for the Brampton Battalion and the Toronto Maple Leafs. “Papa-shop-a-lot” always made sure to get the best deals, loved to cook and entertain.
A special thank you to the caring staff at Spectrum Health Care and the ACE unit of Brampton Civic Hospital.
He will be remembered for his kindness, thoughtfulness and generosity. He opened his heart and his home to everyone.
His Legacy leaves his family with profound love and gratitude for a lifetime of cherished memories.
