I was saddened to hear of Carl's passing today. I grew up in Orangeville and knew the Brawley boys through my brothers Gerry and Dave. Carl and I worked together in the summer of 1973 for the County of Dufferin surveying for road layout north of Shelburne. We had many adventures commuting back and forth from Orangeville on my dad's Honda dirt bike.   He was a great guy to work with and its hard to believe he's gone.  My deepest condolences to the Brawley family.

Oh Carl, curious why I had not gotten a response from you in quite a while... I just found your obituary today.  I'm so saddened.  
I will miss our annual chats when you would receive my funny birthday cards. 
  I'll cherish the good memories of our fun conversations trying to out wit each other while you sipped on your Scotch.

I just heard about carl two days ago.  Very sorry.  He will be missed greatly. Great memories with him during his city of brampton days.   Great times at city, fundraising, golf dinners and events.   What a great Civil servant....and made Brampton proud.   It was an honor to know him.

I was starting my land use planning career at GSAI when Carl was nearing the end of his. However, we had approximately 4 years of overlap working together. During that time, I was lucky enough to have him mentor me. He was a wealth of knowledge and was well respected in the industry. Carl always took the time to share his wisdom and seemed happy to offer his guidance. 

Over the years, I was lucky to consider Carl a good friend. His witty sense of humor and easygoing personality constantly reminded me to not take life too seriously. 

You will be sadly missed, my friend.

Such sad news.  What a flood of memories from those days in old Orangeville. I’m not sure why we called him ‘Cat’ when we were small?!…but that changed to ‘Elvin’ throughout high school. Always calm, reserved and witty,…Carl’s charm was understated yet ever present. I’m not at all surprised by the comments regarding his successful career as an urban planner. He actually launched that choice of profession from an unforgettable project in a grade 13 geography program at ODSS. He was a natural!
So many terrific memories of a very special person.

Uncle Carl, or in later years UCarl was everything you’d expect from an uncle. Family visits were always fun but we definitely knew we’d have a good time if UCarl was going to be there. The running joke with his nieces of calling each other “Turkey’, to the enticing a certain nephew-in-law to building a large bonfire at another nieces wedding, to the constant ‘riling up’ of other family members at the many family gatherings at the Brawley house. 
UCarl gave his opinion and spoke openly on many a topic, but he never made you feel like you couldn’t give your own point of view on things. I think he really enjoyed the many discussions with family young and old.
As we got older he welcomes new family members with open arms whether it was spouses or new grand nieces and nephews. Every visits he would ask how they were doing, and always asked how other family he hadn’t seen in a while were getting along and what they were up to. 
UCarl will be missed, but never forgotten as we hold our memories close.

I was sorry to hear the recent bereavement. Although I did not know Carl well, on the occasions when we met, he was always kind and considerate. Please accept my sympathy for your sad loss.

My condolences to the Brawley family.  I worked with Carl from when he started at GSAI till  2014.  Carl as has been mentioned was a great mentor. You didn’t really work for Carl. You worked together with Carl.

We worked on countless projects, some straightforward some complex, but his attitude was always the same.  Carl also had a good ear to listen to you. He was great when I needed to seek advice or he gave unsolicited advice on starting out in my municipal politics adventure that has turned into a second career. 

Great memories of times together, going down to Schnarr’s  hovel ( that’s what he called it) in Naples, Florida. Talking big, carousing  and having big chunks of our future still ahead of us.  His ability to dish out one liners and sum up snafu situations were priceless for myself and another GSAI colleague Nick Coric.  So much in fact for one entire year, we kept track of every “Carlism” and then read them all out individually at one of our staff Christmas lunches.  He was almost crying, and I’m still not sure if it was from the laughter or if it was from us taking the time to do that for him to be the full center of attention.

He could take a practical joke really well, and I think deep down he liked the attention. For several years, some of the staff came in on our weekend time and would deck out his entire office in Christmas things, wrapping up his phone his files pappering  his doors, Christmas tree,  lights you name it….and then he would have a client into his office for a meeting!

On the  other side was he was a really effective and good professional planner.  We know when some of the various hearings that we had when the other side would find out, it was Carl that they were going up against you could almost sense the hunch of their shoulders and them feeling dejected. 

I was glad I had the opportunity to get out with Carl for lunch this mid spring and get caught up on the last few years.  

Till we meet again Carl, you will be missed.

Carl was a great colleague at the City of Brampton.  He left the City to join GSAI as a consultant where he continued to work with integrity to bring quality developments to Brampton and throughout the GTA.  During those years, Carl was also a friend who made work interesting and fun.  Carl was a straightforward, honest and all around good guy. I will miss Carl, and I know he will be greatly missed by all who have been so fortunate to have known him.

My thoughts are with the Brawley family at this very difficult time.  I worked for Carl as a planner at the City of Brampton for eight years. He was a caring mentor, whose trust and guidance was never forgotten. He was also a lot of fun to be with, along with being a very kind soul.  We had the honour of having Carl at our wedding.

Carl was a great guy and will be missed very much. He was like a brother to me and still wrapping my head around it all

I grew up a stones throw away from the Brawleys. Carl and his family were a great part of the neighbourhood! He is gone too soon but will be remembered.

I grew up two streets away from the Brawley family in Orangeville and knew them well. Carl was in my grade at school and I went through elementary and high school with him. I remember him being quiet, kind, helpful and hard working. I was shocked to hear he had passed away so suddenly and unexpectedly. My sincere condolences to Gary, Joan and their families as well as all of Carl’s friends and work mates.

It was always a pleasure working with Carl.  I met him years ago as a young planner when I started at CVC and he was already with GSAI.  As a planning consultant, he was very easy to work with and was understanding of my position and perspective.  Together we got through some challenging files and I always enjoyed having the opportunity to work with him.  I  learned a lot from him as the planner on "the other side" .  So sorry for your loss, he will definitely be missed.

We will miss our late night sessions, your dry sense of humour, the hockey games,  summer nights out on the patio, shooting the breeze and the many calls asking us to let you in the house as you locked yourself out.   Still have your keys by the way.   I always had your driveway cleared for you when you got home     Hey, That’s  what  family is for?
