Passed away peacefully, in her 91st year, at The Village of Sandalwood Park, Brampton, Ontario on Friday December 2, 2022. Pre-deceased by her Father Arthur John Barwell Sr., Mother Violet Barwell (Watkins), Sister Cora Barwell, Sister Gloria Kay, Brother-in-Law George Kay, and Brother Arthur John Barwell Jr.Beloved Aunt to Stephen Barwell (Yvette Beaudoin) of Campbell River B.C., Patricia Anne Barwell-King (Melissa) of Newmarket ON and Bruce Barwell (Suzanne) of Caledon ON .Cherished Great Aunt to Justin Barwell (Laura) of Acton, ON and Erik Barwell (Stefanie) of Paris, ON. Dear Great-Great Aunt to Everleigh Anne Barwell, Gwendelynn Barwell and Iszabelle Barwell. Fondly remembered by the King, Hesselink, Shaw and Pymm families, as well as many dear friends.
Anne was born on March 27, 1932, and raised in Toronto, ON. She was the youngest of four and often shared many stories of growing up and life with her older siblings during The Great Depression and wartime. She ventured away from home during the 1950s to live in New York City, while employed as a flight attendant with American Airlines. Her life in the skies and in Manhattan provided her with many memories of partying at places like 21 Club with celebrities, including the likes of Joe DiMaggio.
After returning to Canada, she worked until retirement at The Bell Telephone Company in Public Relations. From the 1970s, Anne lived in Thornhill, ON eventually moving to The Gazebo, where she enjoyed many friendships and was an active member at nearby Holy Trinity Anglican Church.
Annes interests and pastimes over the years included volunteering (The Royal Winter Fair, Church, Cemetery Committee, Bell Pensioners Group), riding her beloved horse Mir, gardening, fine dining (with a glass of white wine!), travelling (including to Europe and Antarctica), letter writing, theatre, and entertaining her young great-nephews. She had a strong interest in cars (she knew all the brands and models), dabbling in photography and curating an elegant home with fine furnishings.
After retirement, Anne proved to be extremely dedicated and helpful to her two elder sisters and brother-in-law. She outlived all of them, but was with each one, offering her nurturing love and support until their last moments. It is therefore so fitting that Anne will round out this foursome when she is laid to rest alongside Cora, Gloria and George in Holy Trinity Cemetery. Anne will be remembered for her sense of humour, conversational skills, impeccable wardrobe, and her unfailing love of her family. Anne was the last of her generation in our family. With her loss, we will also mourn the loss of a generation of genteel manners, heirloom pearls, silver spoons, handkerchiefs and hats and gloves.
Cremation has taken place and internment at Holy Trinity Cemetery in Thornhill, ON will be held at a future date to be attended by immediate family.
In celebration of Annes life, a luncheon for family and friends will be held in early 2023, by invitation.
The family wishes to specially thank all of the nurses, caregivers and staff at The Village of Sandalwood Park, as well as the nurses, staff and volunteers at Bethell Hospice, Inglewood.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Bethell Hospice Foundation, 15835 McLaughlin Rd, Inglewood, ON.
