Wilson, as he was known to his friends, was born to William and Margaret Downie on August 31, 1941 in a small town called Cleland, just outside of Glasgow, Scotland. At the time, Wilson’s father was serving the British Navy during World War II, and it would be 1945 before they would meet in person.
Wilson was an exemplary student throughout his academic years, earning the prestigious Tunnock Medal when he was younger, and ultimately graduating first in his class at the University of Glasgow School of Medicine.
Wilson had a long, illustrious career, starting in clinical medicine and then moving to the pharmaceutical industry. He worked in Global Operations for Warner Lambert, Searle and Akros (amongst others) - helping to spearhead a number of very important medications, many of which are still used today.
In 2004 Wilson retired and was able to enjoy his time playing the piano, listening to music, taking pictures (he loved his photography), reading, watching English Premier League Soccer (Go Liverpool!), cooking and traveling. His favorite pastime, however, was spending time with his grandchildren, hearing about their lives and seeing them as often as possible.
At the end of the day Wilson traveled the world, reached incredible heights throughout his career and had a loving family that filled him with pride. But perhaps his best qualities were his warmth, friendliness and thoughtfulness. It always felt good just to be around him, and the world is not the same since he left. He will be missed.
Wilson is survived by his wife Jill, son Paul, daughter Suzy and grandchildren Kayla, William and Paul.
In his memory donations can be made to the Sarasota Music Conservatory, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing the highest standard of music education and performance programs to the children of our community, including scholarships for disadvantaged children.
A celebration of life service for Wilson will be held Saturday, December 17, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Robert Toale & Sons Celebration of Life Center, 4310 Solutions Lane, Bradenton, FL 34211.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.rtslwr.com for the Downie family.
