Born in Dansville, New York, December 13th 1949, he spent his childhood years in East Rochester, New York. The family then moved to Medina, New York, where Rodney graduated from Middleport High School in 1967. That same year the Beggs family moved to Clearwater, Florida, later moving to Miami where he worked for Winn-Dixie grocery stores as an Assistant Store Manager. In 1969 he began a 24 year distinguished career in the United States Navy during which time he and his family resided in many locations throughout the country including Long Beach, California; Saginaw, Michigan; Albany, New York; New York, New York; Charleston, South Carolina; Tampa, Florida and San Francisco, California. During his military career, he served two tours in the Vietnam War aboard various ships where he earned 11 battle ribbons. He later attended the United States Navy Senior Enlisted Academy, retiring in 1993 as an E8 Senior Chief.
He married Cheryl Lynn Haney in Saginaw, Michigan in 1981. Together, they settled in Cave Creek, Arizona after his retirement from the Navy. There, he worked in the financial field for 10 years. In 2003, they moved to Lakewood Ranch, Florida where he worked as a Senior Fiscal Analyst for Manatee County and completed his AA Degree with the University of Phoenix. He is survived by wife, Cheryl, daughter, Stacey, of Freehold, New Jersey, son, Mark, of Lowell, Michigan, grandchildren, Amanda and Colton, of Freehold, New Jersey, grandson, Mason, of Lowell, Michigan, sister, Eileen , brother, Robbie, of Miami, Florida, and brother, Terry, of Valrico, Florida.
He was a dedicated family man, where spending quality time with his children and grandchildren provided his greatest joy. In his free time, Rodney could be found on the golf course enjoying his favorite hobby and life-long passion. Friends and family know that in heaven, he has surely finally enjoyed that illusive hole-in-one. Rodney passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family, after a difficult battle with COPD. He was much loved and will be dearly missed.
A viewing will be held Monday March 24, 2014, from 3:00 to 6:00p.m. at Manasota Memorial Park and Funeral Home, 1221 53rd Avenue East, Bradenton, Florida 34203, with services immediately following from 6-7pm at the same location.
