Richard Joseph Cowan, 77, of Bradenton, FL, passed away on October 17, 2024. Born in the Bronx, NY to Rosemary Kilroe and Richard Cowan, Richard faced many challenges early in life but overcame them with strength and determination, rising above his struggles to achieve great success in both his personal and professional life.
Rich was a man of strong character, fiercely protective of those he loved, and deeply devoted to his family. He had a successful career in business, but he was most proud of returning to school later in life, earning his degree from Trinity College in Connecticut. His tenacity and desire for self-improvement were traits that defined him.
Known for his great sense of humor and natural charisma, Richard had a zest for life. He loved to travel, and at home, he found joy in the quiet beauty of gardening, bird watching, and reading. He had a profound ability to find meaning and fulfillment in both the big adventures and the simple moments.
Richard is predeceased by his first wife, Rita Cowan, and is survived by his loving wife, Ireny Cowan. He leaves behind two children, Mary Barchetto and Kathleen Cowan, and five grandchildren: Molly, Anne, and Matt Barchetto, and Theo and Benjamin Gomes, who brought him immense pride and joy. He is also survived by his sisters, Carol Stenson and Patricia Albertson.
A memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 AM on October 19, 2024, at St. Jude Catholic Church, 3930 17th Street, Sarasota, FL 34235. A second memorial will take place in New Jersey at a later date, with details to follow.
Richard’s life story was one of perseverance and growth, forging his own path with resilience and grace. His legacy of love, strength, and humor will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him. May he rest in peace
