Jay F. Gorzelany, 67, of Bradenton, Florida, passed away on December 9, 2024. Born on June 30, 1957, in Shelton, Connecticut, he was the beloved son of Dorothy Antoinette Vitello and Stanley Joseph Gorzelany, both of whom predeceased him.
Jay graduated from Shelton High School in 1975 before earning a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology from the University of Bridgeport in 1979 and a Master’s degree in Bio-Environmental Oceanography from the Florida Institute of Technology in 1983. His passion for marine science shaped a distinguished career spanning over four decades.
Jay began his professional journey at Mote Marine Laboratory in 1983, where he served as Deputy Program Manager and Senior Biologist until 2009. During his tenure, he was instrumental in establishing the Marine Mammal Stranding Program in 1992 and contributed significantly to research on manatee and boat interaction impacts. He later worked as a Research Scientist with Sea to Shore Alliance and as an Adjunct Researcher and Consultant for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Since 2011, Jay served as a Biological Scientist IV with the Imperiled Species Management Section of the Division of Habitat and Species Conservation with Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission. His work earned him recognition as an expert in environmental monitoring, marine mammal ecology, and coastal ecology through numerous scientific publications.
Beyond his professional achievements, Jay found joy in photography, scuba diving, watching old movies, and cheering on his favorite sports teams. Known for his humor and kindness, he brought warmth to all who knew him.
Jay is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Sarah; his brother Stanley Gorzelany (Connie); nieces Jennifer Gorzelany and Dana Gorzelany-Mostak; and many cherished extended family members. He was predeceased by his father-in-law, Richard Broecker, as well as sister-in-law Karen Sardeson Sullivan and husband Michael.
A visitation for Jay will be held Tuesday, December 17, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Robert Toale & Sons Celebration of Life Center, 4310 Solutions Lane, Bradenton, FL 34211. A funeral service will occur Wednesday, December 18, 2024 at 11:00 am at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church, 12905 State Road 70 E, Lakewood Ranch, FL 34202. Burial will be private for family.
