Born February 13, 1917, in the city of Yonkers, New York, he was the son of William A. and Frances B. (Gentner) Schlobohm.
Upon graduation from The City University of New York, with a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He then received additional engineering training, relating to Navy Material Equipment, at Princeton University.
Serving honorably as a Navy Lieutenant during World War II, he performed various assignments as an Engineering and Contract Termination Officer at industrial firms operating under Navy Contracts throughout the United States. At the conclusion of the War, he served as Inspector of Naval Material and as Naval Zone Inspection Supervisor in the New York City area.
After completion of his Navy service, he was employed by Specialties, Inc., located in Syosset, Long Island, New York. As Executive Engineer, he directed all phases of administrative activity in the firm’s Engineering Department. The company produced specialty aerospace products used in commercial and military aviation.
Subsequently, he joined Grumman Aerospace Corporation, in Bethpage, New York (now Northrup Grumman Corporation). He directed the management and administration of a number of military aerospace programs and contracts. In his last position prior to retirement, he directed all contract activities relating to the Gulfstream Corporate Executive Aircraft Program. Then, as now, this is the world’s most advanced corporate business jet.
In 1940, at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City, he married Emily Jane Stanton. Together they enjoyed active and productive lives on Long Island. In 1979, they moved to Manatee County to begin a lively retirement. Emily Jane passed away in 2010, and Howard continued a fulfilling, independent life, to several months past age 100, dominated by his intense crossword puzzle hobby.
He is survived by a son, Raymond William, and a daughter and son-in-law, Jane Leslie and Robert Van Bergen, all of Lakewood Ranch; a son and daughter-in-law, John Howard and Kathleen (Brown) of Southport, North Carolina; four grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was a communicant at Saints Peter and Paul the Apostles Roman Catholic Church in Bradenton. Funeral services will be private followed by interment in the Manasota Memorial Park.
