He leaves his loving wife of 38 years, Mirta (Pintado) Yero; his sons Emilio, Jorge, Daniel, and Manuel Yero; his daughters Ana Maria Mondragon and Tatiana Yero; his stepson Jorge Cerezo; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved grandmother, mother and father, and his daughter, Maria Cristina Castro.
Emilio was born on April 22, 1931 in Havana, Cuba, the son of Emilio and Maria de los Angeles (Portuondo) Yero. He graduated from medical school at the University of Havana in 1957 and practiced in various medical specialties, including pathology and internal medicine, in both Cuba and Spain until coming to the United States. Once here, he completed a medical residency in Psychiatry at Jackson Memorial Hospital through the University of Miami in 1978. He served the mentally ill in several different practice settings, starting with his own private practice, then moving on to a state psychiatric hospital, a crisis stabilization unit, nursing homes, jails, and finally an outpatient clinic. He worked diligently to improve the lives of his patients until he retired in the year 2000.
After retirement, being an avid chess player, he spent much of his free time analyzing different chess strategies and playing online chess with opponents from around the world. He became well-versed in astronomy and enjoyed stargazing. He also spent time relaxing while listening to classical music and reading countless books.
A memorial service will be held 10:30am on September 5, 2017 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bradenton, FL. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
