Brigadier General David Hewitt Hicks, Sr., U.S. Army (Retired), of St. Petersburg, Florida passed away unexpectedly August 16, 2022, in Bradenton, Florida. He was 77 years old. David was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and dear friend to many.
Aside from his family, David’s greatest devotion was to the military where he served for 31 years. He was commissioned through the Army’s Officer Candidate School program and commanded at the Company through Brigade level. He served in a variety of staff assignments including Executive Officer to the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel. He was Command Director of the North American Aero-Space Command (NORAD) and Assistant Division Commander, 25th Infantry Division. He served three tours in Germany witnessing the fall of the Berlin Wall, and was a fearless patriot and military pioneer whose talent for leading was recognized early in his career. His country, close friends and family honor his dedication.
David was an active and caring man who spent most of his life in service of others. He met his wife, Jontie, in high school and through their close 57-year partnership, helped raise three sons and a family that made him infinitely proud. He loved to laugh, fish, grill, eat home-cooked meals, watch sports, and had tremendous passion for the water.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jontie Spindler Hicks of Lakewood Ranch, FL; sons David Hewitt Hicks, Jr. of Boston, MA, Stephen Hicks (Tori Davis) of Ellenton, FL; Christopher Hicks (Kimberly Keithley) of Clarksville, TN; brothers, John Hicks (Nancy) of Woodstock, GA and Charles Hicks (Marla) of St. Petersburg, FL; grandchildren CPT Taylor Hicks US Army (CPT Ellen Cho); Kaitlan Hicks of Jacksonville, FL; Jordan Hicks Owens (Greg) Ft. Bragg, NC; Nathanial Hicks (SPC ARNG); great granddaughter, Amelia Hicks, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service with full military honors will begin at 11 AM on Friday, September 2, 2022 at Sarasota National Cemetery. A celebration of life service will follow at 12:30 PM at Robert Toale & Sons Celebration of Life Center, 4310 Solutions Ln., Bradenton, FL 34211.
