Anne was born in Chicago to John and Jewel Morrissey on April 5, 1943. She grew up on the north side of Chicago and graduated from St. Timothy School as valedictorian. Anne later joked that she may have peaked too early. After graduating from Alvernia High School in 1960, she earned a degree in Education at Loyola University, while serving as President of the Student NEA, Treasurer of Theta Phi Alpha, Secretary of the Readers Theatre and cheering on the Ramblers to their 1963 national championship and as an alumni into the Sister Jean era.
Anne next took an assistantship at Indiana University in Bloomington and graduated with a Masters in Guidance and Counseling at the age of 22. Anne taught at Washington School in Evanston, Illinois, which allowed her and best friend from college to make a budget grand tour of Europe on both sides of the Iron Curtain.
In 1967, Anne became a guidance counselor at Downers Grove South High School. Soon after she met and married John Newman, a fellow educator, and later settled down for 27 years in Naperville, Illinois, after taking time to raise their daughter, Louise, she returned to counseling at Downers Grove, and later Lisle and Oswego High Schools. During this time, she participated in the American and Illinois Counseling Associations, the Association of American University Women, the Junior Women’s Club, Associates of the Art Institute of Chicago and charitable causes.
Anne enjoyed the performing arts and visual arts in Chicago and the western suburbs, annually cheering on Notre Dame Football in South Bend with family or friends and returning to IU on fall weekends. During the summer, Anne and her family toured different parts of the United States and the tradition of returning to Door County Wisconsin or Martha Vineyard and Nantucket. Most important to her was hosting family gatherings for the holidays and summer backyard parties with games, piñatas or her brother’s fireworks.
In 2004, Anne and family moved to Florida for health reasons and the enjoyment of year around green landscapes, palm trees and water views. Anne met new friends in water aerobics classes and enjoyed the diverse performing arts in the Sarasota, dining out with friends and her long time interest in the classic movies. Anne enjoyed returning to Chicago for family graduations and weddings, trips back to New England, Europe, especially Ireland, and cruises.
Anne was predeceased in death by her father, mother and her brother, Judge Dennis Morrissey of Cook County, uncle, Father James Morrissey, aunts and cousins. A week before her death the family also lost their 31-year-old parrot, “Sunny.” She is survived by her devoted husband of nearly 55 years, John Newman, her devoted and loving daughter, Louise, nieces and nephews and their children, who she cherished as their “Aunt Anne” and more family and friends.
