Ed enlisted in the Army and served in Italy after World War II as a medic and was honorably discharged. He attended SUNY Buffalo State Collage and transferred to Syracuse University and was a brother of Theta Chi fraternity. He then transferred back to SUNY Buffalo State and was a brother of Delta Kappa fraternity where he graduated with his bachelor’s degree in 1951. He went onto his master’s degree at SUNY Buffalo where he graduated with a degree in Art Education in 1965. He met his wife Shirley Joyce of 40 years while in the art education program at SUNY Buffalo State. Shirley sadly passed away in 1996. Ed is survived by his children, Suzanne Guido, Mark Joyce, Mary Lynn Joyce, and Philip Joyce. Ed has 2 grandchildren Amy and Erik Grzybowski. Niece Joanne Hoch and Nephew Michael Joyce both reside in Rochester NY with their families. During our childhood we would spend summers at the lake house with our cousins, such fond memories.
Ed was an Art and Photography teacher in the Lancaster School district and Head of the Art Department at Lancaster Central High School. He was very interested in promoting the arts and directed the High School’s yearly musicals. He was co-founder of “Bowmansville Very Little Theater Group”, directing and acting in plays and did the set designs. He was an usher during productions at the Lancaster Opera House after it’s renovation. He was passionate about gardening we would often find him in the yard with a shovel in his hand and his famous Van Gogh inspired hat on his head. In his young adult life, he was active playing softball on the “Zasada’s” team, he also played golf and tennis. Ed was an avid Buffalo Bills Fan and was looking forward to them winning the Super Bowl this year.
Ed is also survived by Evelyn Joyce who were married for over 20 years. Evie’s sons Vincent, Nick and the late Chris Prospero and their families have all welcomed Ed into their lives. Evie and Ed continued the love of the arts together by attending concerts and going to museums. They traveled to Florida during the winters and enjoyed walking on the beaches there.
