William Andrew McFarland of Queenstown, Maryland died on Monday, March 12, 2012. William is the husband of the late Alice McFarland; father of Alice M. Collins and her husband William G. Collins of Queenstown, Maryland; brother of the late Richard A. McFarland; grandfather of Theresa A. Petersen of Dublin, Ohio, great-grandfather of Michael R. Petersen, Alexandra S. Petersen, Mary E. Pauley, Jeffrey D. Pauley, Jr., Samantha E. Pauley, Alyssa J. Pauley, Jonathan A. Pauley and Diane F. Collins; brother-in-law of Norah McFarland; uncle of Mary Purchase, and Susan Moore; grand-uncle of Elizabeth Lipscomb and Brandon Muha.
William graduated from High School in Ely, Minnesota and graduated in June 1938 from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry and Chemistry and in July 1939 with an Master of Science degree in Biochemistry and Forestry.
William and Alice were married on April 11, 1941 in Crossett, Arkansas.
William's life work included the Civilian Conservation Corp., the Forestry Service, American Lumber and Treating Company as a chemist and Vulcan Materials Company of Gary, Indiana as a chemist.
William was a member of the United Parish of Bowie, Maryland and during his life he attended and was a member of the United Methodist Church, Ely, Minnesota, Hyde Park Methodist Church, Chicago, Illinois, St. Paul's Good Shepherd united Protestant Church, Park Forest, Illinois and Kent Island united Methodist Church, Stevensville, Maryland. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America as scout and leader, and he was an Eagle Scout with the Silver Beaver Award, a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows, he served several positions in his churches and was a member of the Bowie-Crofton Camera Club.
A Celebration of William's Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 31, 2012 at the United Parish of Bowie, 2515 Mitchellville Road, Bowie, Maryland. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Skyline Memorial park, Monee, Illinois.
