Transportation Department Analyst
William M. Bertram, 63, who worked for the U.S. Department of Transportation for 35 years and retired in 2007 as a transportation industry analyst, died May 1 at his home in Bowie, Maryland. He had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease.
Upon retiring, Mr. Bertram received the DOT's distinguished career service award.
William Michael Bertram was born In Indanapolis and served in the Army from 1966 to 1969, including eight months in Vietnam.
His military decorations included the Bronze Star Medal.
He graduated from the University of Maryland at College Park in 1973 and received a master's degree from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in 1980.
He volunteered as a baseball, basketball and soccer coach in Bowie.
Survivors include his wife of 32 years, the former Christine Gerhardt, of Bowie; two sons, Matthew Bertram of the District and Michael Bertram of Bowie; a sister; and a brother.
