Sven Olav Hansen, 88, a 57 year resident of Bowie, MD, went to be with the Lord on January 23, 2018, after a 2 year illness. Sven had lived in Arlington, VA, prior to his move to Bowie and was born on June 1, 1929 in White Plains, NY.
Education was important to Sven and he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from Alfred University in New York, and later another Bachelor’s degree in business from American University in Washington D.C.
People who knew him knew he was a hard worker and entrepreneur; he was a co-owner of the Reisterstown Car Wash, for 15 years, where he worked until his retirement 12 years ago. Prior to this he was a regional manager of sales for the Worthington Corporation in Washington D.C. where he earned many sales awards.
Sven also served his country, serving in the U.S Navy aboard the U.S.S Breckenridge, his highest rank an MM2. While aboard ship he visited many ports and at one time was deployed to Japan aboard a troop carrier during the invasion of Inchon. A particular memory Sven shared was being aboard ship during a typhoon in the South China Sea.
He will be most remembered by his family as an outstanding husband and father. Sven, with his family at his side, built their own vacation home. He enjoyed boating and hockey, his team being the Washington Capitals.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Annapolis, MD and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bowie, MD.
Sven is survived by his beloved wife, whom he married in 1957, Teresa Hansen, his loving children, John Hansen, wife Susan, of Bowie, MD., and Patricia Miller, husband Dana of Bryantown, MD., as well as 2 adored grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Carl “Willie” Hansen.
The family invites friends to a memorial gathering on Friday, February 2, 2018 from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Robert E. Evans Funeral Home, 16000 Annapolis Road, Bowie, MD., where service will begin at 12:30 PM with the interment to follow in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery – Cheltenham, 11030 Crain Hwy, Cheltenham, MD
