Susan York went to be with Jesus, her Lord and Savior, on March 9, 2024 after battling leukemia for the past two years. Leukemia didn’t win. Sue won. Jesus took her to be with Him to the place He has prepared for her. She lived life to the fullest. Even after her diagnosis with leukemia she didn’t let her sickness define her. Nothing held her down. Sue’s love for Jesus was evident to all and healed those around her – family, extended family, students and coworkers, neighbors, friends, church, every person in her treatment visits, even strangers. She was a quality friend. She taught us to advocate, dreamed big with us, challenged our flawed perspective, was our biggest fan, and loved us dearly.
Sue enjoyed traveling – around the United States, national parks, Canada, Europe, Australia, Africa, even small trips to Starbucks or Costco. She loved her trips to Ohio to spend extended time with her grandkids. She enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren and they brought her great joy. Sue was very hospitable always welcoming people into her home – for a cup of coffee, for a meal, for friends who needed a place to live, Bible studies, missionaries. Her care and concern for people and their needs was evident – she not only asked but followed through with action. Sue prioritized family. Every dinner was eaten together as a family. Every holiday was spent with loved ones. Daily Scripture and prayer time were done with family members. Sue valued her church community – serving in food pantry, the girls’ Missionette program, greeting and ushering, Bible Quiz, ladies’ prayer. Sue enjoyed walking and exercising with her neighbors. She loved flowers and the birds we fed at the feeders in our yard. She’ll be missed dearly by her golden retriever and faithful companion Zulu.
Sue was born in Buffalo, New York. She attended Bucknell University graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. She worked for Westinghouse Electric Corporation in Buffalo and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After starting a family, Sue became a teacher to give her the flexibility to spend time with her children. She taught middle school and high school math. She loved her students and her students loved her. Years later she would run into them somewhere and they would thank her for the impact she had on their life.
Susan is survived by her beloved husband of 42 years Donald, her daughter Bethany, her son Samuel, her daughter Rebecca and her son-in-law Kent, and two grandchildren, Asher and Micah. She is preceded in death by her parents Joseph Lewandowski and Ann Shimmel and her sister Nancy Remick. The family appreciates your support and condolences during this challenging time.
A memorial gathering for Susan will be held Saturday, March 16, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Cornerstone Church, 16010 Annapolis Road, Bowie, MD 20715, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 AM.
