Nancy Mulder passed away on Friday, December 1, 2017, in Silver Spring, MD. Nancy was born on November 10, 1927, to Elna Mildred Lord and Evans Warne in Madison, Wisconsin. She grew up on her grandparent’s Lone Star Ranch, on Wildcat Mountain above the Kickapoo River near Ontario, Wisconsin. The farm later became Wildcat Mountain State Park. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin nursing program before joining the U.S. Army in 1950. While stationed in Germany, Nancy met and married a West Point graduate, Lieutenant Dean Duane Mulder. Nancy retired from the Army in 1954 as a First Lieutenant. They had two children: Steven and Susan.
Nancy pursued her nursing career and education while raising two children and moving about the country as an Army spouse. She taught nursing for several years at Howard University and Prince George’s Community College. Caring for the medical needs of others and teaching nursing care were her passions. She also loved reading novels and medical journals. In retirement, Nancy and Dean enjoyed traveling North America by RV, including visits to family in the mid-west timed for the annual wheat harvest in Kansas.
Nancy was preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, Dean Duane Mulder, Lt Col. USA (Ret.) and her daughter Susan J. Thomanek (1956-96). She is survived by son Steven and three grandchildren Mikaela Mulder, Louise Marie Thomanek and Kristina Thomanek. Graveside service and interment with full military honors will be held 3 pm, Wednesday, March 14, 2018, at Arlington Cemetery, Arlington, VA. Everyone desiring to attend must arrive no later than 2:15 pm at the Administration Building.
