In 1940, Lula was married to the late Rev. George Johnson and spent much of her early adult years in Darlington, South Carolina where she began her family. In 1962, she moved to Maryland with her children where she worked at Catholic University in Washington, DC from 1963 until her retirement in 1973.
Having visited Contee A.M.E. Zion Church, Washington, DC in 1963, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Frederick Barnes, Lula Mae joined the church and became a faithful member. There, she served on the Deaconess Board as well as a Missionary and Member of Class #8, Deaconess Marion Walker, Class Leader. During her illness, she was regularly visited by both Rev. Dr. Walker and Deaconess Walker. She remained lifted in prayer by her Contee family and the Deaconess Board who regularly sent cards and messages of faith and encouragement.
Her life was devoted to the love and care of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In them, she instilled the love of God and the values of both a good education and a strong work ethic.
Lula is survived by her six children, Sarah, George (Frankie), Rosa, Samuel (Nell), Jean, and Elnora (Delbert); and, her grand and great grand-children as well as a host of nieces, nephews, church and family friends.
Preceding Lula Mae in death are two daughters, Nezzie and Pearl and her grandson, Melvin.
