

He was born March 4, 1923, in New Orleans, La., and lived for 20 years in Baton Rouge, La., before moving to Crofton in 1966.
He was a graduate of Tulane University from which he received a Bachelor's and Master's in Chemical Engineering. At Tulane, he was the captain and quarterback of the varsity football team and a member of the basketball and swimming teams. He was awarded the Greater Athletic Club Scholar Athlete Award two consecutive years. He was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity and the Omicron Delta Kappa honorary fraternity.
He served in the U.S. Navy as a seaman from 1943-1946. He then worked at Exxon Corporation as Manager of Employee Relations until his retirement in 1981. After retiring from Exxon he worked at Nevamar in Odenton as general manager until he retired again in 1989.
He was a member of numerous Boards of Directors including the Boy Scouts of America, Camp Fire Girls, the Salvation Army and the Anne Arundel Athletic Council. He served as an advisor for Junior Achievement and as chairman of Boy Scout Troop 758 as well as president of Crofton Swim Club.
He coached local youth sports including boys' football, girls' basketball and softball. He also officiated college and high school football for over eighteen years. He was an avid tennis and racquetball player and won many gold medals in the Senior Olympics.
He was a charter member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parish in Crofton where he was an usher at Sunday Mass.
He is preceded in death by his brothers, Levering, Edward and John Brazer Finley.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sallye Wyatt Finley; his children, Dr. Diane Finley of Odenton, Colonel US Army (ret.) Leonard M. Finley III (JoAnn) of Odenton, Andrew W. Finley (Joanne) of Potomac, Captain USN (ret.) Michael Finley (Frances) of Catonsville, Dr. Patrick Finley (Mary) of Columbia and Dr. Margaret Finley (Christopher Meier) of Indianapolis, Ind.; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 p.m. or 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 22 at the Evans Funeral Home in Bowie. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Crofton, with interment to follow at Lakemont Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Hwy., Annapolis, MD 21401 or Seton's Haiti Fund at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, 1800 Seton Drive Crofton, MD 21114-2100.
