Evans Funeral Home, 16000 Annapolis Road, Bowie, MD 20715. Interment is private.
Kirk was born December 21, 1950 in Walter Reed Army Hospital, Washington, DC. While his Dad, Si, was serving in Korea, Doris cared for her two young sons, James Cary born 1949 and David Kirk born 1950, at her family home in Duquesne, PA. As an Army family they were stationed at Ft. Detrick, MD, 1949-1952; Ft. Bragg, NC, 1952-1954; Dugway Proving Ground, UT, 1954-1957; Ft. McClellan, AL, 1957-1960 where Kirk's youngest brother, Kris Michael was born in 1959. Then the family was on to Ft. Meade, MD, 1960-1963 and moving into their new home on Tapered Lane in Bowie, MD on Kirk's 13th birthday complete with a homemade birthday cake, presents and Christmas! They retired from Army life in 1964.
Kirk shared many fond memories of his childhood including their cross country travels in the family station wagon and trailer.
Kirk attended Bowie High School, where he played three years of Varsity Baseball (outfield) and Basketball (guard), graduating in 1969. He also played three years of American Legion Baseball for Cheverly Post 108; during this time he faced an opponent by the name of Joe Theismann.
He enrolled at The University of Maryland graduating in 1973 with a BS degree in Recreation Services. Soon thereafter Kirk was employed by The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Department of Parks and Recreation, from October 1974 beginning as an Assistant Center Director until retiring August 2010 as Division Chief of Central Area Operations.
He enjoyed sports and was quite an athlete throughout his life. In addition to baseball and basketball he was an excellent tennis player and especially loved the game of golf. Connie even got him involved in skiing at which he naturally excelled. He was loyal to his local teams - The Washington Redskins, The Washington Nationals and The Washington Capitals.
Kirk and Connie were married December 3, 1983 (32 years), and moved to Bowie in the fall of 1984 along with their beloved miniature dachshunds; over the years they have raised eight.
Kirk was devoted to his mother's care especially during her later years until her passing February 8, 2016, and was so helpful to Connie during the care of her mother until her passing in hospice care May 6, 2013.
His quick and warm smile will be missed by all who knew him. A kind and gentle loving soul who was taken from us much too soon. Kirk, you were so loved and shall never be forgotten.
