Affectionately known by his family and friends as J and JW , John William Studgeon II, the youngest of three children, was born on August 30, 1976 to Deacon John William Studgeon and Deaconess Willie Meda Studgeon.
From an early age, he was educated in the Prince George’s County Public School System in the state of Maryland. In 1998, he graduated from the University of Maryland College Park where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Kinesiology. During his college years he began interning at the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which served as the catalyst for his career in the intelligence/law enforcement community.
After serving in the FBI for eight years, he went on to work in the private sector with multiple agencies in the area of Homeland Security. In the private sector, JW honed and utilized his leadership skills rising in the ranks wherever he worked. He cared deeply for his teams and worked diligently to see each individual grow and perform at their best. JW’s gift of leadership and development was especially meaningful because of his relationship with Christ.
Under the faithful guidance of his parents and the First Baptist Church of Glenarden community, JW’s Christian identity was developed and nurtured and he gave his life to Christ at an early age. His gifts of servanthood and leadership were evident. He spent much of his time serving in multiple capacities from the Director of the Audio Visual Ministry to Young Adult Ministry Facilitator and Teacher, to serving as a member of the Armor Bearer Ministry. In 2008, his faith journey took him and his family to New Vision Church where he was ordained as a minister in 2011 under the pastorate of Reverend Ronald Crawford. Empowered to use his leadership skills, JW partnered and assisted with the start up of several new churches: Embassy Church in Denver, Redeemer City DC, and New Song in Washington DC. Following in his father’s footsteps, he too was certified as a visiting chaplain/minister at Washington Hospital Center. Most recently, he was in the process of becoming a chaplain to support fellow law enforcement personnel. Equipped with a passion for God’s word, the heart of a shepherd and the gift of encouragement, he desired to see people living out their God-given purpose.
In 1998, through a mutual friend, JW was introduced to his future bride, Anita. They courted for two years and got engaged in 2000. They were joined in holy matrimony on October 12, 2002. JW loved Anita so much that she was “fruitful” for a span of five years and they had three handsome boys: John III (Tre), Christopher and Matthew. Influenced by the wisdom and example of his parents, JW was a dedicated family man, who loved being a husband to his wife and a father to his sons. He assisted with coaching their soccer and basketball teams and loved a good game of ping pong! He was a stellar example of a man after God’s own heart to his sons and a servant and covering to his wife.
On June 11, 2020, at the age of 43, JW went home to be with the Lord. Survived by his wife Anita Studgeon and their children, John III (Tre), Christopher and Matthew, JW’s legacy and love will continue to live on in their hearts. He also leaves behind his mother Deaconess Willie Studgeon; sister, Lisa; brother, Marcus (Treacie); niece, LaTasha; nephew, Maddox; great nephew, Jeremy and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and other close-knit family and friends who will surely miss his light and love. He was preceded in death by his father Deacon John William Studgeon.
