John Willard Hargett, III, passed away on April 11, 2024, at the age of 80. John was born in 1943 and was raised and attended school in the Washington, D.C. area. After serving 3 years in the Army in Korea and Vietnam, John worked for the U.S. Postal Inspection Service for two years and then joined the Metropolitan Police Department, Washington, D.C. for two years. He was then accepted into the U.S. Secret Service and served for 22 years, initially in the Special Investigations and Security Division and then in the Forensic Services Division where he spent the last 11 years as Branch Chief/Chief Document Examiner. For several years he oversaw the Secret Service Training Division’s International Forensic Training Program in Eastern Europe. He lectured for many years at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Brunswick, Georgia and the International Law Academy in Budapest, Hungary. While serving as Branch Chief, he testified twice before a Congressional Sub-Committee on Fraud in Science and in 1991 received the Inspector Generals’ Integrity Award. John retired from the Secret Service in June 1998.
Upon retiring from the Secret Service, he accepted overseas contracting positions as a Senior Forensic Advisor where he served for 12 years working in the Republic of Moldova, Bulgaria, Montenegro, the Republic of Georgia, Nepal and Paraguay with the U.S. Treasury Department, Office of Technical Assistance (OTA); the U.S. Justice Department, International Criminal Investigative Training Assistance Program (ICITAP); and the U.S. State Department, Anti-Terrorism Assistance Program (ATA).
After leaving his overseas contracting positions in 2010, he spent his last years working in private practice as Forensic Document Examiner for domestic and international law firms and corporations and finally retiring at the end of 2022.
John leaves behind is best friend, faithful and loving wife Rosemarie of 54 years, daughter Allison, son-in-law Mike and grandchildren Zach & Sophia.
