Stu was the oldest of 5 children born to Margaret E. and Edwin S. Newman, Sr. in California on September 9, 1932. When he was 4 his family rode on the train eastbound settling in Maryland, and he had fond memories of spending summers in Pennsylvania at his uncle’s farm.
He loved to teach and to learn. When he was young and still not yet school age, he would walk by himself to the school building, and his mother would have to be called to come and get him. Later in his life, Stu would go on to teach and train many firefighters. He was a dedicated instructor to his EMS trainees and their classes, held on campus at the University of Maryland, until he retired from that position in 2016.
When Stu was 17, he started his firefighting career as a volunteer in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Throughout his long and respected career, he was a member of the Tuxedo-Cheverly VFC and the Chillum-Adelphi VFD, the Maryland Fire/Rescue Institute, and Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department and IAFF Local 1619. He had assignments in nearly every Division/Bureau in the Fire/EMS department and retired as Battalion Chief in Prince George’s County.
He was also proud of his military career. He did a short tour in the United States Marine Corps. He was a member of the Air National Guard and the United States Coast Guard, retiring as a Lieutenant Commander Reservist.
He was a competitive roller skater along with his wife, Ann. They competed in Figures and Dance and won many medals and trophies as a team. Even after Stu had to stop roller skating at age 82 due to an injury, he loved his “skating family”. He was dedicated to the Lanham/Seabrook rink and continued to clean the floors almost every morning until he became ill in June 2023.
Stu was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 35 years Ann G. Newman, his brother Thomas G Newman, and his step-son Laurence Rich. He is survived by his siblings Anne Les, John Newman and his wife Carol, and Alice “Betsy” Rector and her husband Ron, along with his children, Edwin “Stuart” Newman III and his wife Colleen, Timothy Newman, James Newman and his wife Kay, Matthew Newman and his wife Becky. His step-children; Jo Ann Cornell and her husband Don, Barbara Shadwell and her husband Mark, Sharon Rich and her partner Dana Harley, Ernest Rich, Kent Rich-Godusky and his husband Glenn, 15 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was a father, grandfather, great-grandfather, instructor, competitor, friend and hero. On July 20, 2023 at 4:40am, we lost our hero. He will always be remembered.
Family will receive friends at the Robert E. Evans Funeral Home, 16000 Annapolis Road, Bowie, Maryland 20715 on Thursday, August 3, 2023 from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm.
