Richard (Dick) Nancen Nakashian, 91, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2021. He was born, August 18, 1930, in Newton, MA, the youngest of 6 children. He leaves one surviving sister, Alice Erickson, while his other siblings Haig Nakashian, Grace Boyajian, Nuart White and Ben Nakashian predeceased him. Richard died at his home in Pocasset, MA surrounded by his loving family and his caregivers in his last few days.
Dick was the beloved husband of Marita Small Nakashian (deceased). He leaves his 3 children, their spouses and 4 grandchildren, Edward R. Nakashian and his spouse Jing Lin and their children Louis and James Nakashian of Peabody, MA, Robert H. Nakashian and his spouse Kathleen Giles and their children, John Nakashian of Marion, MA and Martha Nakashian of Mattapoisett, MA, and his daughter Janet M. Sinclair and her husband Robert Sinclair of Sherborn, MA.
Dick started his career with Bostitch Staples Company as a salesman and later decided to take a risk and pursue a sailing and cruise boat company in Boston Harbor. He founded Baystate Provincetown Steamship Company and reinstated the Boston to Provincetown service daily between Memorial Day to Labor Day that had been discontinued back in the 1930's.
In addition, Dick saw a need for services to George's Island, Hull commuter boat, Nantasket Beach, the USS Constitution and evening entertainment cruises. He gained a reputation for running the cleanest and safest boats in Boston Harbor. When he decided to sell the company, he had the largest passenger boat fleet in Boston Harbor at that time.
All that knew Dick, admired him and greatly respected him. In addition to working in conjunction with Gilbert and Associates (who designed many of the vessels Dick had built), Dick also created the opportunity for his crew to learn the finishing touches on every vessel built; carpentry, plumbing, electrical, etc. Dick’s relationships, both professional and family, were very important to him, so much so he kept in close contact with his crew, even having crew parties for his former staff, up to 30 years after he sold the company.
A Celebration of life & Reception will be held on Saturday September 4, 2021 at Bucatino's Restaurant & Wine Bar, 12pm, 7 Nathan Ellis hwy. North Falmouth, MA 02556. All are invited, please RSVP with Bob Nakashian; [email protected]
