family. He was 86.
Born in Salem, Mass. to George and Lillian (Jalbert) LeBrun, Ray graduated from Salem High where he
was a three-sport athlete in football, basketball, and baseball. In 1952, he enlisted in the US Navy, and in
his four years of service he was awarded several medals and proudly played first base for the All-Navy
baseball team. Upon his discharge, Ray enrolled at Salem State College where he played baseball and
earned his bachelor’s in education. Ray and his wife Lorraine wed on June 28, 1959 in Salem, and in
1963 moved to Cape Cod, where they raised their six children in Bourne. Ray earned a master’s in
education from Bridgewater State College, and enjoyed a more than 30-year career in the Bourne Public
Schools. He began as a teacher and guidance counselor at Lyle Junior High on Otis Air Force Base, and
went on to serve as a guidance counselor at Bourne High School. He had many fond memories of former
students whom he helped to find the right college and career paths. In the summers and on weekends,
Ray was known as the “Odd Jobber” where he provided painting, landscaping, and maintenance services
to many clients who appreciated his incredible work ethic and attention to detail. In their time off, Ray
and Lorraine loved to vacation in Florida and Aruba, and particularly enjoyed a trip to Europe presented
as a gift from their children upon Ray’s retirement. Ray was also an avid fan of the Bourne Braves.
Ray had a passion for coaching and was at the helm of many football, basketball, and baseball teams
during his years in education, and after his retirement volunteered to coach a women’s softball team.
But perhaps his most proud coaching experience was with the Dodgers of Bourne Little League, leading
the “Dodger Dynasty” to six championships from 1977-1982.
Ray taught religious education and was a devoted member of his parish, St. John the Evangelist in
Pocasset. He shared his deep faith through his involvement in the Cursillo movement, and was one of
the pioneer leaders of the Encountering Christ in Others (ECHO) program on Cape Cod. Always
possessing an innate sense of compassion for those less fortunate, Ray volunteered for the Samaritans
and ran weekly Bingo groups at Bourne Manor. He often delivered food and clothing to those in difficult
circumstances, and his home was always open to young people who might need a safe haven where
they could stay for a while.
Ray’s greatest love of all was his family. He was the loving father of Kathleen Norton Cannavo (Steve),
Donna McGonagle (Paul), Peter (Kathleen), Leanne Dineen (Gerry), Michael (Sarah), and Scott (Erica). He was the beloved grandfather (fondly known as “Pep”) of Alyssa, Nikki, John, Jaryd, Lauryn, Jordan,
Maggie, Pete, Jack, Meg, Brett, Charlie, Nathan, Molly, Ryan, and Mia; and the great-grandfather of
Delaney. Ray also leaves his brother, Paul LeBrun (Adrienne) and sister, Claudette LaChance (Frank). He
was predeceased by his parents; his sister Doris; and his loving wife of 56 years, Lorraine.
Ray’s family wishes to thank the staff at Atria Woodbriar Place and Keystone Place for welcoming Ray to
their communities in his later years, and the ICU staff at Falmouth Hospital for their exceptional care
during Ray’s final days.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, April 29, 2019 at 10 am at St. John the Evangelist Church.
Visitation Sunday 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church. Interment in Massachusetts
National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in his memory may be made to ECHO
of Cape Cod (9 Laura Lane, Bourne MA 02532); The Trevor Project (thetrevorproject.org); or Bourne
Youth Baseball (PO Box 3096, Bourne, MA 02532).
