Patricia A. “Pat” (Esposito) Garrity, Age 86 of Bourne, passed away on April 12, 2024 at her home in Pocasset. She was the beloved wife of the late John O. “Jack” Garrity. Born in Adams, MA she was the daughter of the late Celia and Horace Esposito. As the oldest by many years she was like a second mother to the younger girls. Music was always a big part of her life. Although she learned to play the piano and accordion, vocal music was most important to her including music of the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and especially songs from musical theater. Reading was important as well, especially books about travel. She enjoyed taking part in the music program in high school and was finally able to satisfy her desire to travel when she took part in an exchange program with a high school in Wisconsin. Pat graduated from Drury High School in 1956 and went on to North Adams State College to continue her education. It was there that she was introduced to Jack by a mutual friend and the rest is history.
Pat and Jack were married on October 12th, 1957. They moved from North Adams to Pittsfield where their two children were born. When Jack was offered a position at Worcester Memorial Hospital they moved to Shrewsbury. They raised their two children there and they spent many hours outdoors and traveling to many parts of the country. It was then they set a goal to visit all fifty states, which they accomplished in 2011 on their cruise to Alaska. A trip through the Panama Canal (a lifetime dream of Pats) in 2013 was a bonus.
She was involved with many actives with her children as they grew up including a Cub Scout Den Mother, a Girl Scout leader, volunteering at their schools and teaching CCD classes at their church. As the children got older she decided to go back to college and finish her degree in education. She graduated from Framingham State in 1974 and spent some time working in the Shrewsbury school system part time when she made a career change and went to work for the American Red Cross where she retired in 1999.
Bulldogs were an important part of the family. Membership in the Bulldog Club of New England and Bulldog Club of America led to raising, showing and rescuing bulldogs for many years. Living close to Boston allowed the family to see many Broadway musicals including the King and I with Yul Brynner.
Pat is a big sports fan and has faithfully followed the Red Sox since she was a young child and later became a big fan of the New England Patriots.
Since both of them retired, they moved to Cape Cod in 2001, they enjoyed having new adventures. Birding was exciting since there were many species that they had never seen before. They became interested in the osprey as they watched them return in the spring, raise their young and leave in the fall. They were thrilled to discover the College Light Opera Company where they enjoyed the musical theater program.
They became members of St. John the Evangelist church in Pocasset and took part in many activities including St. Vincent de Paul. If you attended the 4pm Mass, you would be greeted by Pat & Jack with a smile and warm welcome. They both volunteered at the Bourne Food Pantry for many years and made many new friends in town.
Pat leaves a daughter Jean Garrity of Falmouth, twin granddaughters Amber Ingram and Sonja Leber of Newport News, VA and two great granddaughters Renate Garrity and Lyla Ingram. Her great-great grandson Oliver. She leaves a sister Kathy Thompson of Williamstown. She was the mother of the late John P. “Jack” Garrity and the sister of the late Maureen “Samm” Esposito.
Mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday April 17th at 10 am, St. John of the Evangelist Parish, 141 Shore Rd., Pocasset, Ma. Burial will follow at Pocasset Cemetery.
Donations in memory of Pat may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. John the Evangelist Church, PO Box 916, Pocasset, Ma 02559.
