Michael M. (Mike) Amrich, Sr., aged 90, passed away quietly at his home in Davie, FL on July 26, 2015. Mike Amrich was born to Slovak immigrant parents, the late John F., Sr. and Anna (Pustaj) Amrich in Torrington, CT on September 24, 1924. After graduating from Sacred Heart grade school and Torrington High School, Mike entered the US army. As a Sergeant Mike served in World War II in Europe, was a German prisoner of war in Italy, and on discharge received a Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster. Following his graduation from Springfield College, Mike worked for Liberty Mutual Rehabilitation Center in Chicago, IL as a certified prosthetist. In 1963 he relocated to the Liberty Mutual Rehab Center in Boston, MA as the Director of the Prosthetic Department from which he retired in 1986.
Mike was married to Mary Menegus in Torrington, CT. and later lived in Needham, MA where they raised five children. After Mike’s retirement they relocated to Forestdale, MA with a winter home in Davie, FL. They enjoyed 50 years of marriage before Mary passed away in 1998. In 2000 Mike re-married Gertrude Elliot from Davie, FL. Mike Amrich was a faithful member of Corpus Christi Church in Sandwich, MA and St. David’s Church in Davie, FL.
Michael Amrich is survived by his wife, Gertrude of Davie, FL.; daughter Mary Ann Amrich and husband Charles Leavitt (Raymond, ME); sons: Michael Amrich, Jr. and wife Shelagh (Franklin, MA), Mark Amrich and wife Maura (Tyngsboro, MA), Martin Amrich and wife Gina (Sinking Spring, PA), son-in-law, Roger Hankins (Holden, MA); step-daughters: Terry (Elliott) McNamara and Leslie (Elliott) Prince; and step-sons, Hampton, Steven, Michael, and Craig Elliott; 10 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren, 32 nieces and nephews, and sibling, Sister M. Paracleta Amrich SSCM, Chicago, IL.
In addition to his first wife, Mary (Menegus) Amrich and daughter, Michele Amrich Hankins, Michael is predeceased by twelve brothers and sisters: Anna, Mary, Veronica, John, George, Cecilia (Amrich) Raffaele, Stephen, Elizabeth (Amrich) Kaczmarcyk, Joseph, Dorothy Amrich Mayzel, Francis, and Cyril.
A burial service will be held on Friday, October 9, 2015 at 2:30 p.m. at the National Cemetery in Bourne, MA. A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, October 10 at 11:00am at Corpus Christi Church, 324 Quaker Meeting House Rd., Sandwich, MA 02537.
