June Lorraine Schmidt

Lorraine was born June 6, 1923 in Boston, MA, the daughter of the Walter J. and Marion Fayle Laughlin. She graduated from Jamaica Plain High School and Bryant and Stratton Business School. She worked as a bookkeeper at her family’s real estate and insurance agency, and later at Ferris and Mahoney Contracting, both in Boston.

On October 29, 1955 she married Capt. Henry E. Schmidt, who preceded her in death on October 1, 1991.

Following their wedding, Lorraine became a proud Navy wife and homemaker. She and Henry raised their four children, first in Coronado, CA, and for more than 20 years in State College, PA. In 1984, they fulfilled their goal of retiring to Cape Cod where the family had vacationed each and every summer.

She is survived by her four children: Robert Schmidt of State College, PA; William Schmidt of Falmouth, MA; Thomas Schmidt and his wife Donita Rudy of Spring Mills, PA and Lorraine Basler of South Yarmouth, MA; her three grandchildren: Kelley Schmidt of New York, NY; Lieutenant (junior grade) Bryan Schmidt of Jacksonville Beach, FL; and Drew Basler of Tucson, AZ; and many nieces and nephews who lovingly referred to her as “Auntie Raine.” She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Anne Laughlin and Peggy Laughlin.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her five siblings: Walter Laughlin; Grace Marion Laughlin, Marguerite Barrett, Robert Laughlin, and Lois Gamble.

She attended Our Lady of Victory Church in State College, PA and Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville, MA.

Visitation will be held at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 40 MacArthur Blvd., Bourne, MA, on Monday, February 12, 2018 from 9:30 -11:30 am. Following a brief service, Lorraine will be laid to rest at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
