Born in Boston, MA and son of the late James Francis and Mary Sarah (Harrington) Dunphy, he was a graduate of Mission High School and a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. After serving his country, Mr. Dunphy was employed for over 30 years as a lineman for New England Telephone Company until his retirement in 1995. Retirement was no match for his gregarious spirit and his desire to keep learning and living, and so at the age of 51, he returned to college at the New England Technical College in Rhode Island, where he earned his associates degree in marine systems. He then subsequently earned his license as a United States Coast Guard Captain. Mr. Dunphy then spent the next 25 years answering his lifelong calling to the sea by ferrying passengers old and young up and down his beloved Cape Cod Canal aboard The Viking and later The Lawrence Lynch. “Captain John” as he was known, was always willing to bring young children into the ship’s wheelhouse to share with them the beauty and awe of his gateway to the Atlantic.
In addition to his wife of 51 years, he is survived by a sister, Anne Montgomery of Braintree, many loving nieces and nephews, and was predeceased by his brothers James Dunphy, Joseph Dunphy and Bernard Dunphy.
