Born in Rockland, MA son of the late Edward and Helen (Sweetland) Gilmartin and brother of the late Edward Gilmartin.
A proud veteran of the United States Army he served overseas during the Korean War. He was also a member of the Army'sWinged Victory Chorus and performed with the Bavarian Symphony Orchestra.
He worked for many years for John Hancock. but his true love was working with his hands and building things. He was always so proud of his final piece which much of the time was furniture or toys that he created for one of his children or grandchildren.
Before moving to Plymouth George and Carol raised their family in Abington where they attended St. Bridget's Church and he was a member of the choir. George was not only active in the church but was also committed to his community and much of he time was involved in town events including coaching little league baseball, helping to run sports banquets, and was actively involved with town government.
Family was the most important thing in his life and he adored being together with them as much and as often as possible.
Besides his loving wife he is survived by 5 children and 3 son in laws, Sharon and Robert Doherty of Halifax, Michelle and Thomas Hardiman of Plymouth, Alynne and John Greene of Randolph, Peter Gilmartin of Randolph and Kathleen Cole of East Sandwich; his brother, Alan and his wife Nancy Gilmartin of Pembroke and sister, Patricia and her husband William Shea-Vacca of Carver, 11 grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation on Thursday, 4 to 7 p.m. at the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home 40 MacArthur Blvd., Bourne. Funeral Mass and Burial are private. In lieu of flowers donations in his name can be made to Cranberry Hospice, 36 Cordage Park Circle Suite 36, Plymouth Ma. 508-746-0215
