The son of the late William E. C. and Helen M. (Long) Perry, he was born on September 28, 1925 in Plymouth MA. He attended Bourne Public Schools, graduated from the Mass Maritime Academy, served in WWII in the U.S Merchant Marine, and then in the naval reserve until 1953. After the war, he worked for Harvey Douglas Weatherproofing in sales. In 1951 he started Insulation Inc. which continues today as JM of New Bedford Co. Inc., a weatherization company.
Elwell lived many years in Berkley, MA before retiring to Florida in 1987. There he bought and ran Garden RV Park in North Ft. Myers before ultimately retiring to golf, bridge and sunshine in Florida. Through out his life, Elwell was a great outdoors man and enjoyed many years of hunting and fishing through out North America. Elwell had a life long interest in genealogy. He spent countless hours researching his family’s roots and published many accounts of it including the Perry-Long Genealogy 1646-1976. Elwell was an active member of the Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge. He also served in numerous organizations through out his life that helped members of his community.
In addition to his wife, Anja, Elwell is survived by his children. Patricia Lewis of
Fishers, IN, Betsy Braden of North Swanzey, NH, Barbara Dzialo and her husband Paul of Raynham, MA and Elwell H. Perry Jr. and his wife Janine of Acushnet, MA. He also has 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
He was the brother of the late Jane Perry Degagne of Bourne, MA and the late William Perry of Solon, ME.
Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 7 pm on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 in the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 40 MacArthur Blvd. in Bourne. Funeral services will begin at 11 am on Thursday, March 8, 2012 at the Bourne United Methodist Church, 37 Sandwich Road, Bourne, with burial following in South Monument Cemetery.
