She was born the first of three children to Denis and Helena Keane in Drimoleague, County Cork, Ireland where she spent her childhood. We think her parents would be proud of the life she lived.
She met her love, William “Bill” Fahy, in July 1954 in Ireland when he escorted her to the Skibbereen Annual Agricultural Show and then they met up again at a town dance later that night. They got along quite well from the start! In June of 1955 Eileen left Ireland for Boston where many of her mother’s relatives lived and Bill followed. In December 1957, they got married and shared a beautiful 66 years of marriage together. That love of dancing that they shared from the beginning continued throughout the years, impressing (or embarrassing depending on who you talk to) their children and grandchildren at weddings and events. They always looked like they were having a blast out there! Eileen and Bill were a great team, complimenting each other in many ways. Sometimes Eileen would have to reel Bill in and other times Eileen was too serious and Bill would get her to crack a smile. Their love and devotion to each other was evident and a gift to witness.
Eileen was thoughtful, intelligent, creative, stubborn and could throw a witty comment or disapproving look when she felt necessary. She had a deep appreciation for art and the colors, details and beauty of the natural world. She expanded her creativity by taking classes at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston over the years and in retirement she and Bill shared a passion for travel which led them to discover so much beauty and diversity around the world. They set the bar high when it comes to traveling! Their grandchildren remember “Grammie and Granddad” being gone for months and excitedly looking at the map to see where they were in the world. They have so many memories from their travels that Eileen remembered for the rest of her life. She always seemed to laugh when sharing about their eight months sailing trip down to the Bahamas and back. She couldn’t swim but she went anyway!
Eileen and Bill were blessed with four children; Kieran, Deirdre, David and Brendan who they raised in Stoughton and Cohasset. In retirement they built a home in Pocasset where they lived together for the past 29 years. Eileen loved the peace of Pocasset and into her 70s she enjoyed daily walks for miles through town or down to the beach where she’d collect sea glass, shells or smooth beach stones to use creatively in their home or yard. Their four children added four wonderful spouses to their family; Carol, Christopher, Holly and Genevieve and then 9 grandchildren and four great grandchildren joined. Eileen loved newborns so it was a blessing for her to see two of her granddaughters become mothers and spend time with their little ones during her last 6 years. In her last month she was happy to be able to make it to birthday parties for her great grandchildren, a high school graduation for her granddaughter and hear the news of a fifth great grandchild on the way. Two days before she passed, she sat with her granddaughter smiling at an ultrasound picture of the little boy on the way! Family was a constant in her life.
Eileen was a woman of strong Catholic faith, and we take comfort knowing that she is experiencing a profound peace and joy that she deserves with her son, David, who passed away in 2017. She loved and missed him dearly, so we’re happy they are together once again.
