John Ewald, M.D., 68, of E. Falmouth, passed away on September 2nd after a brief illness. John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, and a dedicated physician to the leagues of patients who sought his expert medical knowledge and caring support. Well-known for the kindness and acceptance with love he showed his patients, always ready with a listening ear. A native of Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania, he went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Sciences at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA. Dr. Ewald went on to medical school at Milton S Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, PA followed by residency and fellowship training in Internal Medicine, Nephrology, Endocrinology and additional certification in Geriatrics at West Penn Hospital and UPMC in Pittsburgh, PA While training in Pittsburgh, John had the honor of working closely with Thomas E Starzl, a pioneer in kidney and liver transplant surgery. Additionally, in his Endocrinology fellowship he trained with Joslin Clinic for Diabetes. After completing training, Dr. Ewald’s ensuing clinical practice in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts included all aspects of General Internal Medicine, but with a particular focus on high blood pressure, Diabetes, and various forms of kidney disease. Before leaving West Penn Hospital he became Associate Program Director of the Teaching Service and was awarded ‘Teacher of the Year’. He was an accomplished musician. He sang solo in Coffee Shops and was a member of the band, ‘Institution of Sound’ while in college. He enjoyed fishing on ‘his pond’, snorkeling and bicycling. John felt civic involvement a duty, and he volunteered for both of Elizabeth Warren’s campaigns and others. John’s faith was a focus of his life. His father, Louis, was a Lutheran Minister and his grandparents were missionaries in China for 45 years. John’s mother: Emeline Bucher, aunts and uncles all spoke a Chinese language and lived most of their lives in China. He wanted to visit China to see if the church and school they built was still there. John is a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church.
A viewing will be held at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, MacArthur Blvd, Bourne, MA on September 15th from 4-8 PM. The Memorial Service will be at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, Main Street, Falmouth, MA
on September 16th at 11:00 AM.
